I agree with Ratliff, to an extent, that music does not, in itself, express emotion but it merely mimics emotion through the lyrics and style of the notes. Music allows the listener to decide what emotion the music he/she is listening to. This furthers the point that music is subjective and is different for every person that hears it. The Beatles' song Julia is a great example of transmission. The words, themselves, are bland and don't evoke emotion but the style of the music give way for a certain type of longing in each person. It is a longing for memories that have past. Every person that listens to that song can feel something different but for me, that is what that song means to me. Another song that does this is the song Blackbird by the Beatles. This song does the exact opposite of what the song Julia does. The music itself is simple as to put emphasis on the lyrics. I see the song as a welcoming of death for it is what we have been waiting our whole life to find. It fixes any misgivings we have in our mortal world when we are finally given eternal life in heaven. This may be my interpretation but to many it is a song about the civil rights movement. It is supposed to describe the unfortunate state that America is in pertaining to race.
