The actual name of this was changed to Puducherry in 2006, although its original name was Putucerri, which derives from the word of “new village”. It was formed out of the original colonies of french India. It is found on the Southeastern coast of Coromandel Coast. There are actually four areas of this territory are divided into seaside resorts, while the main city is divided into two by a canal. There is also a main port here called the port of Puducherry. Around the city there are wells to supply the city with water. The major languages spoken in the sectors are Tamil, Malayam, and Telugu. Hindus, Muslims, and Christians also make up much of the area. Puducherry contains the Hindu ashram, or religious retreat by Sri Aurobindo, who was an important philosopher.

This was a French settlement that is derived into four parts called Pondy, Yanam, Karaikal, and Mahe. Each of these subsections is in different states. The capital of Pondicherry is in the state of Tamil Nadu. There is much French influence on the country. The main history of the country is that there were many empires such as the Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagar. Around the 1760’s, the british destroyed the city and the fort. In the later 18th and 19th centuries, the city would fall again into British hands. Puducherry is a Union territory so it has its own government, but is then controlled by the larger government in New Delhi. There is also an elected Chief minister, cabinet members, and laws and legislative objectives. Pondicherry is a more organized area education-wise and this is supported by the literacy rate of 81.49%, which is relatively high for the rest of India. Fresh seafood is a common food here, as it is based largely on the ocean. Indo-French war pageantry is celebrated on the eve of Bastille Day, and there is also a yoga festival at Aurobindo Ashram in January of each year.

This area has a population of 657,209 people. It is surrounded by the state of Tamil Nadu, and obtains most of their culture. The French East India Company established this city as their headquarters in 1674. They established 5 trading posts along the South Indian coast and the city was separated by a canal into the French quarter and the Indian quarter. During the anglo-french wars, puducherry was controlled by many different groups. The climate of pondicherry is tropical wet and dry. Summer lasts from April to June and this is followed by a time of high humidity and thunder showers from June until September. The majority speaks timil but there is also a community of French people. They mainly use Road, Railroad, and are to travel. Pondicherry is connected by train to all metros and other important cities while the airport is located at Lawspet. This is a popular tourist destination in South India as it has many colonial buildings and French architecture. They also have botanical gardens, Hindu temples, and ashrams.

In many traditional Indian families, the idea of interdependence is something that is highly emphasized. Interdependence is having a mutual reliance between people. Most people will normally proceed to do activities keeping the reputation of their family in mind. Over time, many Indian families have actually split up, in the sense that certain family members will move across the country or even to a different location in India. As more and more families move around the world, they maintain a closer, stronger relationship with said family members. Another characteristic that stands out in many Indian families is the difference between female and male roles. The main difference between a male and female in a traditional family, are certain customs they must follow. For example, “pardah”, which practices the seclusion of women in some situations. Normally, this will be practiced in Hindu and Muslim families. One of the main circumstances that go along with practivin “pardah” is that women should only leave their home if a man is accompanying them. Finally, the idea of arranging a marriage is something that is extremely common in families all over India. Normally, an arranged marriage will be set up by close family friends, or the potential spouses parents.
Many of the families that make up India’s population are most often than not extended family. In each family, everyone will have some sort of role. The role you receive by your family is heavily influenced by how old you are, and your specific gender. In many households, you’ll see a good amount of children. This is because many adults who grew up in a culture that was heavily influenced by the Indian culture, view children as amazing and even consider them gifts from god. More often than not, religion and even the traditions practiced in a household will affect the exact family structure.
Throughout history and the evolution of beliefs throughout the Indian culture, family has always been a respected and highly valued aspect in essentially everyone’s life. What I mean by this is families enjoy a certain society in which the unity, integrity, and loyalty in all families come before everything else. In fact, family is so admired in the Indian culture, important decisions that have somewhat of a large impact on a person's life, will have a huge influence from family members. Some of these decisions include finding a man, or a woman to marry, and even the occupation they select. Besides making an impact on important life decisions, Indian families cherish the idea of caring and supporting each other. For example, in many families, the elderly people are often cared for by younger generations and potentially even help with bringing in income. Besides helping the elderly people, widows, adults who never settle down and marry, and people who have some sort of disability will be taken care of as well.

India includes a mass proportion of the world’s Hindu population, and the second leading muslim population behind Indonesia. Predictions show that in 2050 that India’s muslim population will grow by 311 million. Making it the largest muslim population in the world in 2050. India’s constitution states freedom for all including religious freedom. Indians experience a high level of respect regarding religion. The government allows smaller religious groups to have respect and allow equal freedom. Religion is a very, very, very important part of Indian life and culture, making Indians a very religious group of individuals.

The main religion in India is hinduism making up 80% of the population, 11% of the population is islam, and the rest of the population which is 8% is Christian. Religion is a main part of Indian culture, making religion a large portion of families lives. Hinduism is largely related to social and political developments, as this religion expresses traditions and traditional ways. Hindu originated in India making up 95% of the populations religion. Islam first spread through spread the west throughout South Africa. India had the 4th largest muslim population. Christianity was spread through apostles in 1991, even though Christianity is not widely spread in India there is a small portion who practice this religion.

Hinduism is considered the oldest religion going back to 4,000 years of practice and is the third largest religion after Christianity and Islam. Christianity is the world's largest religion consisting of the belief that Jesus is the son of god and is the messiah who saved the human race. Islam beliefs include that there is one god and Muhammed is the messenger of god. Hindu is the belief that time is cyclical, basically there are four seasons. Cyclical time also correlates with time, and different time ages. For example the golden age which represents the growth of technology, science, and the arts. The golden age was an intense time for the pushing of growth and population. Dharma is the eternal and inherent nature of reality.

Social Norms

India is based on a hierarchical society, meaning that everyone is ranked according to qualities. The caste groups are mainly associated with Hinduism but also exist among other groups and everyone knows the basic rankings in places. People are typically ranked according to wealth or power. Men outrank men, while elders outrank the newer members. Purity in this society is based with ritual cleanliness like bathing daily in water and dressing appropriate, while eating the correct foods. People are born into groups and are deeply involved with one another. To be lonely is man's greatest fear. Most moments in their lives are spent with others. The family is highly valued and kin help to provide economic security. Relatives often live very close by. All family members are involved with one another and the oldest man acts as the head of the family, and they are typically the ones to own the land or businesses. Purdah is the veiling of women, where they typically avoid public appearances and they must cover certain parts of their body. This is typically important for large, wealthy families, and as you can see, most of the control is in the men’s hands. The birth of a child is celebrated with blessings, yet is typically more profound when the male babies are born. Marriage is important for most everyone in India, often leading to arranged marriages. Often the parents would arrange their child’s marriage. Sometimes, the wife and husband will find each other naturally. The bride will often live with the husband in his familial home, where they would produce children, and grow the family. Death is destructive to the family, and when the husband dies, the woman fears widowhood, but is to remain chaste.

India is a place where social norms are something that is highly valued and followed by everyone. One of the most basic social norms is the belief that feet and shoes are unclean and filled with germs. Because of this, it is common to wear sandals that can be taken off before entering a home. Another social norm regarding feet is to always make sure that when seated, your feet aren’t facing anyone or even touching anyone because of how dirty feet are considered in their culture. Another body part that is considered dirty is the left hand. For example, when you do tasks like blowing your nose or rubbing your hands together to wash them, the left hand will be the one doing the “dirty” work. That being said, when you are receiving something like a gift, you only use the right hand, or both. In the Indian culture, it is very uncommon to see people greeting each other with a hug, pat on the back, or even a hand shake. This is because the idea of having personal space, or a personal bubble is valued and respected throughout India. Another social norm is being mindful of the hand gestures you use. For example a simple wave that would normally indicate that you’re trying to say hello, can actually mean go away, or no. Another key tradition to many Indians is keeping modesty in mind when it comes to clothes. For example, you won’t see most women wearing low cut tops, or even ripped jeans. Another key factor to traditional social norms if the food you eat there. What I mean by this is, you won’t see a lot of the “normal” foods we eat here in America, like a burger. This is because the cow is considered a sacred animal that many people will refuse to eat. Finally, you’ll see many people playing assortments of sports, for fun. You’ll commonly see sports like cricket, soccer, and field hockey.

India is considered one of the most diverse countries in the world with a wide variety of religion and culture. Education, family and respect are very important to the Indian culture. Indians normal dress has gone from a traditional dress to a western look. Today Indians wear jeans and t-shirts which is a more casual look than normal. Saying namaste is a common saying either its a religious saying or a farewell. Wearing sandals and flip flops are another common clothing article. Wearing skimpy or tight clothing is not common or appropriate for street wear.
