The key competences at school in Europe are important in developing national and local curriculum. But they are not enough, besides key competences we also need transversile e.g. critical thinking, communication, colloborating skills. We were also talking about statistics which were given by EU. We were critically evaluating their relevance. Are the EU statistics up date? The key competence cultural awereness and expression were presented during the lunch. It was intersting to discuss about national key competencies and how they have improved.

One of the most important transversal key competences is learning to learn - as we progress through the course readings and discussions - how much we learn from them? How much we learn from environment and people we meet? How much time we spend each day reflecting back on our experiences and newly gained knowledge to make sure we engage ourselves in deeper transformational learning?

Today we went by boat to a nearby island. We had breakfast there and during the lesson we discussed about key competences. We had an interesting debat about school systems and their representations and it led us once again to critical thinking. The lunch was a success; a local barbeque. The quote is definitely ¨Sometimes I understand¨.

Is it possible to set standard key competencies for whole of Europe? I have been quite happy with the Finnish education system. We got new curriculum and started with it last August. It gives many possibilities, but how do I have time for all this? Basic skills should be taught to all, because then the students are equal. After that it is possible to build one's own path: you either can go quickly or slowly. As a special education teacher I also worry for those, who need more time and extra help. As a teacher education trainer I worry how I have time to introduce teaching to students. Teacher students need lots of support, so that are prepared to meet the challenges of our demanding work: keeping up the civilization of the nation.

Today we went by boat to a coral reef from Sainte-Rose. The place was fantastic! The colours of the water were incredible! I had never seen yellow crabs before!! This place was like from the dream!
The theme of the day was Developing key competences. These key competences were made by European countries. They gained importance in recent years both at policy and school level. These 8 competencies are important in each Eu country. In Finland we have a new curriculum where these competencies are included in a way or another. Our schooling system is good and the teachers are well educated to follow the curriculum and take care of each child´s ability. Those who need more support will get it. Those who are more talented can go on with their way. Everyone has an opportunity to develop his or her own skills and abilities.

We started our day by jumping to the boat and sailing to a beautiful island. We were discussing about school systems all around the Europe and we noticed many similarities but also differencies. Critical thinking can change someone's mind, in Europe, in a school, in a classroom... Critical tinking can also make connections between what happens locally at Guadeloupe and what happens in other parts of the world.

Key competences - I like this concept. What is important in our life? Key competences include so called 'traditional' skills: communication in my mother tongue, communication in foreign languages, ICT skills, litteracy and maths and science skills. Theses skills are basic, you need to use them on a daily basis, however there is much more: learning to learn, social and civic responsibility, initiative and entrepreneurship, cultural awareness, and creativity. When I discuss the importance of the key competences with other teachers we often come to the conclusion that initiative and entrepreneurship help in achieving success.
