This YouTube video from 60 Minutes Australia shows a real example of how quickly internet addiction can develop in adolescents. This video shows how easy and convenient it is for busy parents to hand their children an iPad or sit them in front of their TV so they can complete a task or just have five minutes of peace and quiet. When parents start to think they have found a solution to calm their child but slowly start to realize they created a bigger problem. The video highlights the effects of internet overuse and how it’s creating a negative impact on their children behavior and mental state.

This YouTube video from AsapSCIENCE goes into detail about the psychological effects of internet overuse and why it’s making us sad. The video explains how our brain produces a dopamine hormone to feel emotions and behavior. As humans, we crave dopamine and look for it everywhere we can. With our cell phones, we can get unlimited dopamine without even leaving the house, awesome right? The video explains how this unlimited dopamine can quickly lead to an individual feeling depressed, or lonely. With that, cell phones are decreasing attention spans, making it hard for us to focus. This video provides a lot of information on how internet addiction is affecting adults too and its affection in our everyday lives.

This article from Times Magazine discusses a study that found that young people who spent more than seven hours or more on screens each day were two times more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Along with the associations between screen time and diagnoses of depression and anxiety, the study found that young people who spent seven hours or more a day on screens (not including schoolwork) were more easily distracted, less emotionally stable and had more problems finishing tasks and making friends compared to those who spent just an hour a day on screens. This article gives great information about the comparison between young people who are actively on screens and those who are not, and their effects.
