What: Being physically active helps to bind brain cells together. Lack of movement shrinks the brain, so students need to stay active to be physically, as well as mentally well. Gym teachers should promote fitness over sports, teaching children healthy habits that will last a lifetime. This "new way" of teaching gym will lead to higher academic success. Students that have fitness in school perform better.

So what:
1. 17% increase in reading and comprehension among students that participated in a zero hour gym class.
2. Students at Naperville finished first in the world in the science portion of the TMSS test.
3. Elementary school in Kansas City has seen fitness levels improve and violence decrease.

Now what:
-As a teacher, it is important to add movement into my classroom so that students are at their best and ready to learn.
-Students that are able to move during school will have more success in the classroom.
-In my classroom, this would work by incorporating short brain boosts and other ways for children to move though out the day.
-In my school, it is important to work with other teachers, especially physical education teachers, to make sure students are getting an adequate amount of movement and exercise.
-It is important that the exercise is appropriate for students' wants and needs, and will lead to students learning lifelong healthy habits.

Students need to have clear and concise directions and consequences for not following directions. Things like where they should stand, how loud they should be, how they interact with each other are important for students to know.

Birthday Menu and Flexible Seating

Teachers should introduce a "birthday menu" to their classroom/school. This menu should have options for students to choose from for their birthday that do not include food. These options often should include movement, like a dance party. Students do not need to have unhealthy snacks at school and having a birthday menu that does not include bringing in food can help relieve stress from students, teachers, and parents.

Flexible seating can help reduce behavior issues by allowing students to move or "fidget" while they are sitting. It helps students to learn better and students enjoy it. There are many flexible seating options, and some are as easy as an exercise ball or putting a resistance band around desk legs. All students should have flexible seating, you should not single out just the students that may need it. All students can benefit from flexible seating. To introduce it, Lets students "play" with it for a couple of minutes to get it out of their system.
