October 1789

The Great Fear was a wild panic that spread throughout France. It was caused by rumors circulating throughout the country that nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize the peasants. As the peasants became more and more scared, they began to arm themselves. They even broke into nobles houses and destroyed some of their items. Riots began to form all throughout the country until its citizens turned their anger towards the royal family and demanded they come to Paris. This event portrayed the change occurring throughout France.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.timetoast.com/public/uploads/photos/5546177/great_fear.jpg?1476955384

August 1789

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was based off of the ideas of The Declaration of Independence. It guaranteed citizens many different rights and freedoms. Although this seems like the ideal document for the people of France it was not due to its unseen restrictions. This document did not apply to women and when a woman named Olympe De Gouges tried to stand up for women by stating her ideas, she was considered a threat to the revolution and was executed.

https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/1/declaration-of-the-rights-of-man-and-citizen-french-school.jpg

July 1789

When people began to fear what their king was going to do next, they broke into a prison known as the Bastille. They were looking for gunpowder and weapons to arm themselves incase it was needed. The large mob attacked and killed many of the guards of the prison, eventually gaining them full control over it. The mob began to advertise their success by marching through streets with the dead guards heads on pikes. This event became very symbolic in the French Revolution.

https://robinellisdotnet.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/00006081-copy.jpg

When they did this, they guaranteed they would not leave until a new constitution had been written. Many people who favored the revolution joined them soon after.

June 1789

The National Assembly was composed of the third estate delegates who were eager to make changes within the government. Their main priority within this assembly was to give an advantage to the third estate. This group demanded that all three estates meet together and that each delegate would have a vote. This was to ensure the third estate would be given greater opportunities to make a change in their everyday lives. Constructing the National Assembly was one of the first intentional acts of revolution.

http://i.cbc.ca/1.1573419.1379052303!/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/16x9_620/hi-france-assembly-852-2865.jpg

July 1793

Robespierre became the leader of the committee of public safety. Soon after he began to rule France as a dictator. This period of time was known as the reign of terror. His job was to protect France from its enemies, but did not do the best job with this. Many people were wrongfully executed for being against the revolution. The wrong accusations of people was how this time period gained its name.
http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/cartoon-showing-maximilien-robespierre-the-french-political-leader-picture-id2667710

April 1792

Austria and Prussia went to war with France in fear that if the French revolution was a success, their people would strive for one too. It began with Prussia invading France and imprisoning many. Rumors began to spread about prisoners plans to escape and feared it, so they killed over 1000 prisoners. On September 21, the National convention took office and abolished the monarchy. With this, they established France as a Republic.
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/b6/54/70/b6547025325664c1c1aa4ae416169030.jpg

September 1791

The Constitution of 1791 was created primarily to reduce the kings power through the country and give its people a larger say. It had the power to create laws and approve or reject any declarations of war. This helped to lessen the kings role. Even though this constitution was created, the King still held the executive power. This constitution did not last, despite its priority to help the people in France.
http://alphahistory.com/frenchrevolution/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/constitution1791.jpg

June 1791

As the National Assembly grew their relationship with the church and state, Kind Louis became concerned about his status in the country. He believed the royal family was in danger and needed to act soon. They attempted to escape to the netherlands, but when they arrived at the boarder there were guards there.
