The Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park in known as one of the America’s most intact Civil War battlefields. The park has more than 1,000 acres of land which commemorates the Battle of Prairie Grove.

Battle History

On December 7, 1862 Union and Confederate forces clashed in a fierce day of fighting that resulted in 2,700 casualties. This battle marked the last major Civil War engagement in Northwest Arkansas.

The Borden House

The Borden House was a strong point for Confederates where a majority of the fighting and casualties occurred. It was burnt down the day after the battle had ended, but rebuilt into what is seen today by Archibald Borden shortly after it had been destroyed.

Hindman Hall Museum

Hindman Hall Museum is the main learning area of the state park which also serves as its visitor center.

Latta House

The Latta House belonged to John and Jane Latta. The house was moved to the state park in 1958 in order to prevent its demolition. John and Jane Lotta came to Arkansas from South Carolina in 1834 with two slaves, known as Dan and Ben, who did most of the masonry work and interior cabinetry for the house.
