My first article is a reenactment of what potentially occurred on Angel Island as an immigrant family. My second article is about the Shirtwaist factory fire in New York and the events that took place.

The incident that occured on March 25, 1911 at 4:30 pm at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory was everything horrific and more. A small fire broke out on the eighth floor of the building caused by a lit cigarette. As panic arose, the workers realized one of their only fire escapes were closed off due to the doors being locked from the inside out so the women could not take breaks. In a matter of seconds, the entire room was engulfed in flames. The only other way out was through a small fire escape outside of the window facing the streets below. Inevitably, this fire escape collapsed sending ladies plummeting 100 feet to the ground, killing many. Over 50 women jumped to their deaths to avoid the flames. After a long 30 minutes, the fire fizzled out revealing the horrors inside. Reports talk about the 3 brave men who fell to their deaths while creating a human chain for people to get across the building with, which resulted in broken backs.

Families Tragic Time At Angel Island

Here in San Francisco, we have first hand encounters with people from Angel Island. Here, over one million people are currently being processed through Angel Island. We have spoken to a family of Asian immigrants who are here to seek America's advanced medical practices. The family that has been interviewed contains 5 members. Mother, Father, Daughter, an elderly woman who appears to suffer illness, and an elderly man. They describe their story with a heavy heart, and the mother tells the details. “We have traveled long distances to escape disease and poverty. Last year, in 1920, we arrived in San Francisco California to start our new lives.”

As we arrived, we were processed, searched, and sent to a dingy facility. We have been separated from my mother who was battling illness. To this day, we have not seen her, but people say she may have been sent back to the country. Day and night we are fed boring and bad food but we also experience foods we've never seen before. We are all crammed into small rooms with dozens of other people. The smells were rancid because of uncleanliness and people not being able to bathe. After a long time spent at this glorified prison, my family was released and now we reside here. People treat us differently because of where we come from, but otherwise, we are making home here.”
