This is probably the first serious business letter that I have ever written, because it was to be mailed out. I chose MIT since it is my dream school, and I even got a reply back with information and a complementary poster.

The best series I read this year was the Matched series. It had an Utopian/Dystopian theme. The story included a virus, war, society, and love. It tells the story of a girl named Cassia and the adventures she goes through.

My Success

My biggest success in language arts this year is learning to not only read one genre of books, but to explore more on different genres. For example, I found that I actually quite like reading non-fiction books after reading the novel, "I am Malala". Malala's story really inspired me to learn more about other people's lives, and not just the people in fictional tales. I am also enjoying other genres like, Medieval Fiction, Newbery Award books, and others. In general, I think this helped me out a lot by expanding not only my reading genres, but it also helped me learn something new about myself :D.

Socratic Seminar

Socratic seminars are debates that we hold in class on various topics. We all sit around a long table with a partner behind us. Before the seminar, students take notes for their side of the topic so that we are prepared when the day comes. On the day of the seminar, we are separated into two groups and each group takes turns to talk about the topic. After one group is done, their partners give them advice and tells the person how they did during the entire discussion, the same steps repeat for the next group. This year, we have had two socratic seminars, one about the influence of the book A Christmas Carol, and the other about the book The Watsons go to Birmingham 1963, on the Civil Rights. I personally learned a lot from the seminars, I learned not to hog up the conversation, but at the same time, not say nothing at all. I think this really helped me improve my social/conversation skills.
