technology in the classroom concerns by Shayla Hofmann

Elementary school students have a very short attention span. My concern is that my students will lose focus and motivation after a short time using technology in the classroom. What do you think?

Hello! I do believe that students will be tempted to lose focus and motivation if they use technology too much, but if it is used in moderation, it can be beneficial. I'd say as long as technology isn't the main method of instruction, the use of technology will be fun and different for them, so they will be more focused on their tasks. This video I found brings up some very good points about technology and students' attention spans.

I do agree that students have a short attention span, I think that if a teacher was constantly there guiding the technology use and making sure there was a healthy mix of in person teaching and technological instruction then that would help to eradicate that problem.

I agree with you, I do believe the attention span of Elementary students are very small. Having fun interactive games or activities through out the day keeps the students excited about what they are learning in class.

Shayla,
I completely agree with you on students having short attention spans. Just like Cassidy said, you could give your students a brain break. In my classroom while I was observing my teacher would give students a brain break. They got to come to the carpet and dance. This would happen a few times a day and I could definitely tell a different in before the brain break and after.

This is also something I would worry about! With how commonplace technology is to today's children, much of the novelty is gone before school even starts. I would think that for that reason, technology would have to not be the focus and instead be the medium. Use of materials that are inherently technological is what I would consider the best way to maintain interest.
