For Years 7 and 8, an old fashioned approach; students line up before the class starts, are invited/led in, and then stand behind their desks until the greeting and invitation to sit.

When I call the roll, I ask them to give me a one-word of how they are feeling that day.

Encouraging statements like, 'Let's make history/You've got this', etc. Love using metaphors and playing with language like 'let's get on the freeway of learning, etc...for a bit of lame fun, etc...

Providing a safe learning environment with expectations

Before an activity, explain explicitly the expectations regarding behaviour and goals. E.G A spokesperson will be sharing findings to the class. As an audience memeber, we actively listen and look at the speaker to show that we are listening. As a spokesperson for you group, you need to speak loudly.

Old fashioned perhaps but..... screens closed, need to see your eyes, good morning etc. Directions about what you need for this class - paper, pen, laptop, work book etc

as you call the role, students report something from the previous lesson or content points or react to questions you ask

or react to a topic you write on the board or a reading that is in front of them

or from the homework

eg:

everybody reports a quote from a play / specific section of a play / related to a specific theme / related to a specific character / type of literary device eg: metaphors or imagery etc.

everybody says a persuasive device / or device - explanation / device - explanation alternating

reports something learned last class

reports a key value / theme / idea / link

require some students to elaborate on others responses

if repetition or 'i don't know' ask them to listen to the next three or four then circle back and ask them for their favourite one that they heard (they may just pick the last one they heard but it still holds them accountable)
