Embedding International Mindedness Padlet by

Please be sure to log into Padlet or sign you name to your posts!
Consider some of the strategies suggested to Andrea and Toni (personas) to encourage international-mindedness in their schools. Which strategies would you use in your school? Develop a plan of things you could implement in your classroom or school to embed international-mindedness. You can choose whatever tool you like to make this plan (text, audio, video, etc.). Can you make this change alone? Who might you need to collaborate with? Is this a short-term strategy or a long-term strategy? How will you know it is working

During our morning meetings, we share news from around the world because staying updated is important. The students bring in news, articles, or something they've recently read to share with the class. This helps us feel more connected to the global world and understand how we're all linked to one another.

Here are some strategies I would use in my school to encourage international-mindedness:

Ask students about their interests: To better plan, I would first ask students what they want to learn about other countries and cultures. This helps me understand their curiosity and makes my planning easier, allowing me to tailor lessons to what they’re most interested in.

Cultural sharing: I would encourage students to bring something from home that is significant to their culture. This would help foster an appreciation and understanding of different backgrounds, allowing them to learn from one another.

Cultural activities: I would organize essay writing, debates, and discussions related to cultural diversity, acceptance, and understanding. These activities would help students explore multiple perspectives and express their thoughts on international-mindedness.

Guest interactions: I would plan for guest speakers from different cultural backgrounds to share their experiences, either in person or virtually. This would allow students to hear firsthand stories from people who have lived in different countries, helping them connect more deeply with global perspectives.

For Toni and Andrea, who have lived in various countries, you have a unique advantage. Your life experiences can directly influence your students' understanding of international-mindedness. You can share your own stories and insights, offering them real-world examples of how diverse and interconnected the world is. Instead of focusing on challenges, you can use your experiences to help students connect with cultures beyond their own and see the value in embracing diversity.

Of course, I can’t do this alone – none of us can. As the saying goes, "No man is an island." We need to collaborate, share ideas, listen to one another, plan together, and make decisions as a team. My first step will be to collaborate with my team members, my coordinator, who is the leader guiding us, and our school management, who will provide the necessary support. I will involve the learning community: parents, students, school staff, family members, and anyone else who can contribute valuable resources to the process.

Formative assessments, reflections, feedback, peer assessments, rubrics, observations, analysis, and evaluations will help me determine if the strategy is effective. The changes will be visible in how students share their ideas, whether verbally, through written work, presentations, or even in their behavior and actions towards their learning. If we find that the strategy isn’t working, we can revisit and adjust the plan, making it flexible. In some cases, we may even need to create customized plans to cater to students' different learning styles, ensuring differentiation is in place.

Establish connections with local and international schools for cultural exchanges and joint projects. Additionally, collaborate with international organizations to create real-world global connections.

Marina Tasueva

Being Russian Acquisition teacher in Russia, it's easy for me to encourage international-mindedness in my students. in Y5 today one students noticed that they all were from different countries. In the lessons I encourage students to speak about their countries, compare not only languages but also cultures. In Y6 we have UOI "Communities" when every child chooses a country not necessarily of their own, makes a research and present everything that they learned about it.

There can be different country themed assembles when students present to other students about their countries, make quizzes to check everyone's knowledge, and even might bring traditional food cooked at home.

Marina Tasueva

If we want the changes to be long-lasting, whole community should work together as a team on it. All teachers and leadership of the school should collaborate together and plan both 'in homeroom" and "whole community" activities. Also, the events should be planned throughout the academic year so everyone is involved and has his/her part to take.
