It was a controversial advance in war technology. Gas masks allowed soldiers to become immune to these attacks.
2. Although the consequences weren't immediately extremely widespread (it only impacted those on the battle field – though more so than those shot by guns). It has  changed the course of how war is fought and negatively impacted the environment. We have detected traces in the soil ever since.
