In Chapters 6 and 7 of "And Then There Were None," Agatha Christie masterfully employs word choice, diction, sentence structure, and narrative voice to heighten suspense and foreshadow the revelation of the killer's identity.

Word Choice and Diction:

Simple and Direct: The language used is straightforward and easy to understand. This reflects the somber and serious nature of the scene.

Concise and Economical: The dialogue is concise, with no unnecessary words or phrases. This contributes to the scene's tension and urgency.

This use of a foreign language term serves as a Cultural Reference. It adds a touch of sophistication and worldliness to the character, even in the midst of a disturbing dream.

Sentence Structure:

Short and Choppy Sentences: The short, fragmented sentences create a sense of tension and suspense. This is particularly evident in Rogers's dialogue, where the broken sentences convey his shock and confusion.

Simple Sentence Structure: The simple sentence structure reinforces the direct and straightforward nature of the conversation.

Pauses and Hesitations: The use of ellipses (...) indicates pauses and hesitations in the dialogue, further emphasizing the characters' emotions and the gravity of the situation.

Narrative Voice:

Omniscient Narrator: The third-person omniscient narrator allows Christie to delve into the characters' thoughts and emotions, providing insight into their fears, suspicions, and guilt.

Manipulating Perspective: The narrator's perspective shifts between characters, revealing information gradually and maintaining suspense. This technique keeps the reader guessing and engaged.

By skillfully employing these literary devices, Christie crafts a gripping narrative that culminates in the shocking revelation of the killer's identity. The careful selection of words, the strategic use of sentence structure, and the manipulation of the narrative voice all contribute to the overall impact of the story.

CHAPTER 6

Dr. Armstrong has a nightmare where he’s standing at an operating table and realizes he has to kill the patient, who looks like Emily Brent, then Marston. Rogers wakes him up, panicked, because Mrs. Rogers won’t wake up. Armstrong checks and finds out she’s died in her sleep, possibly from too many sleeping pills. Rogers says she only took what Armstrong gave her. The next morning, Vera, Lombard, and Blore go to look for the boat, but it doesn’t show up. After breakfast, Armstrong tells everyone about Mrs. Rogers’s death. Emily Brent thinks she died from guilt after hearing the recorded accusation, while Blore suspects Rogers killed her to keep their secret safe. Later, Blore and Lombard agree the boat isn’t coming. Macarthur, acting strange, says no one will ever leave the island. Meanwhile, Rogers notices there are now only eight Indian figurines on the table.

In Chapter 6, tension escalates as the guests wake to find Mrs. Rogers dead in her bed. Dr. Armstrong examines her and suspects she may have died from an overdose of sleeping medication, though he is unsure whether it was intentional or murder. This creates suspicions among the group, with Mr. Blore suggesting that Mr. Rogers might have killed his wife to keep her silent. However, Lombard and Armstrong remain unconvinced, as they cannot reconcile this theory with Anthony Marston’s death the previous evening.

The guests then notice that two figurines are now missing from the set of ten little soldiers on the dining table, symbolizing the deaths of Marston and Mrs. Rogers. The group begins to realize that the mysterious “Mr. Owen” is methodically carrying out a plan to kill them all, following the “Ten Little Soldiers” nursery rhyme.

In Chapter 7, the tension among the guests continues to rise. Vera Claythorne and Emily Brent take a walk together, during which Emily confesses that she once dismissed a servant, Beatrice Taylor, for becoming pregnant out of wedlock. This conversation reveals Emily’s rigid moral code and lack of empathy, unsettling Vera. Meanwhile, General Macarthur becomes more withdrawn, sitting by the sea and speaking of his guilt, stating that he is ready to die. Dr. Armstrong and Philip Lombard discuss the deaths of Anthony Marston and Mrs. Rogers. They conclude that neither could have been accidents or suicides, firmly believing that both were murders done by the mysterious “Mr. Owen.” Realizing that they are all in grave danger, they decide to search the island for any signs of their unknown host. They enlist Mr. Blore to assist them, and the three begin planning a systematic search of the island, including all possible hiding spots.
