This objectivity reduces bias and increases the reliability of the results.

Statistical Analysis

Quantitative research enables the use of statistical analysis to determine the effectiveness of the SQ3R method. Techniques such as t-tests, ANOVA, or regression analysis can help identify significant differences or relationships between the variables, providing a clear picture of the method's impact.

What is quantitative research?

Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to wider populations.

Quantitative research involves analyzing and gathering numerical data to uncover trends, calculate averages, evaluate relationships, and derive overarching insights. It’s used in various fields, including the natural and social sciences. Quantitative data analysis employs statistical techniques for processing and interpreting numeric data.

Method

How would you collect the data and why?

Sampling methods and data collection using surveys will be used.

Describe the methodology you choose for your study, in order to test your hypothesis (es)

Survey Research as it is fundamental for all quantitative outcome research methodologies and studies. Surveys are used to ask questions to a sample of respondents, using various types such as online polls, online surveys, paper questionnaires, web-intercept surveys, etc. Every small and big organization intends to understand what their customers think about their products and services, how well new features are faring in the market, and other such details.

The first step for collecting data will be handled using Probability sampling: A theory of probability is used to filter individuals from a population and create samples in probability sampling. Participants of a sample are chosen by random selection processes. Each target audience member has an equal opportunity to be selected in the sample.

Once the sample is determined, then surveys will be distributed to collect the data for quantitative research; close-ended questions and multiple-choice questions will be used in our survey.

Explain why this method is the best for your purposes.

Objective Measurement: In this study, we can quantify the level of critical thinking skills before and after implementing the SQ3R method using standardized tests or assessments. This objectivity reduces bias and increases the reliability of the results.

Population

Our population are the Literature course students at Latina university in Santiago.

As the title suggests, the aim of this study is to enhance critical thinking skills through the SQ3R reading comprehension method, the major and specialization of Literature students is crucial because it empowers them to analyze, interpret, and evaluate texts deeply and thoughtfully. Critical thinking fosters the ability to question assumptions, recognize underlying themes, and understand multiple perspectives, which enriches their comprehension and appreciation of literature.

Design in quantitative research refers to the structured and systematic plan that outlines the methodology for collecting and analyzing numerical data. It involves selecting a research strategy (e.g., experimental, correlational, or survey-based), defining variables, determining the sample size, and deciding on data collection methods.

What would the treatment look like?

Control

In quantitative research, controls are essential for ensuring that the results are valid and reliable. Controls help to eliminate or minimize the influence of extraneous variables that could confound the results.
Procedure. How are you going to present the treatment?

Diagnostic Test: Administer a diagnostic test to all participants to identify their initial level of critical thinking skills.

Pre-Test: Conduct a standardized pre-test to assess the baseline critical thinking skills of both the control and experimental groups.

SQ3R Training: Provide training on the SQ3R method to the experimental group. This training will include detailed instructions on each step of the SQ3R method.

Implementation Phase: Over the course of one academic semester, students in the experimental group will apply the SQ3R method to their literature readings. The control group will continue their usual reading practices without the SQ3R method.

Post-Test: Administer the same standardized test used in the pre-test to both groups to measure any changes in their critical thinking skills.

Survey: Distribute a survey to gather additional data on students' perceptions of the SQ3R method and its impact on their critical thinking skills.

Variables:

Independent: SQ3R reading method

Dependent: Enhancing critical thinking skills.

Analysis

How will you analyze the results?

Analyzing the results of quantitative research involves several steps to interpret the numerical data collected. First, data must be cleaned and organized, addressing any missing values or inconsistencies.

SWOT analysis: SWOT Analysis stands for the acronym of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threat analysis. Organizations use this statistical analysis technique to evaluate their performance internally and externally to develop effective strategies for improvement.

What kind of result will confirm or disconfirm your hypothesis?

In quantitative research, results that confirm or disconfirm our hypothesis are determined through statistical analysis. If the data shows a significant relationship or difference as predicted by the hypothesis, and the p-value is below a predetermined threshold (usually 0.05), the hypothesis is confirmed.

Conversely, results that disconfirm a hypothesis would indicate no significant difference or effect, suggesting that the intervention did not produce the anticipated outcomes or that the relationship between variables is not as hypothesized.
Significance

The research on enhancing critical thinking skills through the SQ3R reading comprehension method among literature course students at Latina University in Santiago holds significant educational implications. By demonstrating the effectiveness of the SQ3R method, this study provides educators with a proven tool to foster critical thinking, an essential skill in literature and beyond. Enhancing critical thinking equips students with the ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information, vital for academic success and professional development. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on reading comprehension strategies, offering empirical evidence that can inform curriculum design and teaching practices. While the study focuses on literature students, its findings could be broadly applicable across disciplines and educational settings, suggesting that the SQ3R method can be adapted to enhance comprehension and critical thinking in various contexts.

Conclusions

In any research are crucial as they summarize the key findings, address the research questions, and clarify whether the objectives were met. They highlight the practical implications of the research, suggesting how the findings can be applied to improve educational practices—in this case, recommending the incorporation of the SQ3R method in literature courses. Conclusions also guide future research by identifying study limitations and suggesting areas for further investigation. They provide a sense of closure, tying together the study's components and reinforcing its contribution to the field. Overall, the significance of this research lies in its potential to improve educational methodologies and outcomes, and the conclusions will offer actionable insights and directions for future studies.

How would you collect the data and why?

Describe the methodology you choose for your study, to test

your hypothesis (es)

Quantitative data will be gathered through pre-and post-tests to measure vocabulary gains among students using gamification apps compared to a control group using traditional methods. Additionally, surveys and questionnaires will capture qualitative insights from students and teachers regarding their experiences and perceptions of the learning methods.

This dual approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of vocabulary improvement, combining objective performance metrics with subjective feedback to assess both actual growth and learner engagement.

Explain why this method is the best for your purposes. Explain here what quantitative research is.

Quantitative research is the best method for demonstrating the effectiveness of gamification in English vocabulary learning through apps due to its ability to collect and statistically analyze numeric data, providing objective evidence of learning outcomes. This method enables tracking of vocabulary acquisition over time, showing clear progress. The use of large sample sizes ensures that the findings are broadly applicable. Additionally, quantitative research allows for comparison of different gamification apps and their effects on language skills. Tests and questionnaires used in this approach provide transparent, understandable results for both; educators and learners, making it an ideal choice for this study.

Participants (subjects or population) Who would you test and why?

Our population is taken from 10th graders at Centro Educativo Bilingue Luis Amigó.

We decided to subject students to surveys and tests because they are the object of our research and only test it through est we can buy any of our hypotheses, it is impossible to know if they have better progress using game apps, if we do not test it through asking them their opinion and seeing the real results, besides making a comparison between the scores they get using traditional methods or using these applications. It is also important for us that the English teacher participates because it is the one who can ensure that making a comparison between the oral participation of the students, their motivation, and their performance in the classroom.

Design Explain what design is in quantitative research.

In quantitative research, the design is a structured plan outlining how the study will be conducted to ensure reliable and valid data collection. It includes defining the research question and hypotheses, identifying the target population and sampling methods, specifying variables, choosing data collection methods, and determining the experimental or non-experimental design. It also involves planning the data analysis methods and ensuring ethical considerations are met.

What would the treatment look like? Treatments can include experimental interventions like educational programs, or behavioral changes, and are often compared against a control group to isolate their effects. These treatments help researchers systematically investigate and draw conclusions about their efficacy.

What kinds of controls would you need to control for your study? Define here how "controls" are important in quantitative research.

These controls include maintaining consistent teaching methods across both the experimental and control groups, ensuring similar demographic characteristics (e.g., age, language proficiency), and controlling for external factors such as prior exposure to English or additional language support.

How are you going to present the treatment? Here are some common types of treatments that can be applied in quantitative research:

Educational Interventions

Behavioral Interventions

Technological Interventions

Therapeutic Interventions

Environmental Modifications

Controls in quantitative research are measures or techniques used to eliminate or minimize the influence of extraneous variables that could affect the validity and reliability of the study's results. Controls help ensure that the effects observed in the study are due to the treatment or intervention being tested, rather than other confounding factors.

Procedure.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeUQhqMD020tjPsHWpjp6CBTth4CsN3yBTz-PgueHK-B3atjQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Variables. Analysis

How would you analysis the result

What kind of result will confirm or disconfirm your hypothesis?

Analyzing results in quantitative research involves systematically evaluating the data collected to determine if there are significant effects or relationships between variables

Confirming Results:

Improved Reading Fluency Scores: If the implementation of motivational strategies leads to statistically significant improvements in reading fluency scores among 4th graders, this would confirm the hypothesis. You would expect to see higher scores on standardized reading fluency assessments or other measures of reading speed and accuracy.

Increased Engagement in Reading Activities: Confirmation could also come from observing increased interest and engagement among students in reading activities both inside and outside the classroom.

Positive Feedback from Teachers and Students: Teachers reporting increased motivation and enthusiasm for reading among students, as well as positive feedback from students themselves, would support the hypothesis.

Disconfirming Results:

No Significant Improvement in Reading Fluency Scores: If there is no measurable improvement in reading fluency scores despite implementing motivational strategies, this would disconfirm the hypothesis. This could indicate that the strategies used were not effective in enhancing reading fluency.

Decreased Engagement or Interest: If students show decreased interest or engagement in reading activities despite the motivational strategies, this would suggest that the strategies did not have the intended impact.

Negative Feedback from Teachers and Students: Teachers reporting no noticeable change or even negative reactions from students towards the motivational strategies would also indicate a disconfirming result.

In practical terms, confirming the hypothesis would involve demonstrating that the motivational strategies lead to measurable improvements in reading fluency skills and positive changes in student attitudes towards reading. Disconfirming the hypothesis would involve showing that the strategies do not result in these improvements or have unintended negative consequences.

Significance and conclusions

The importance in our research on the implementation of motivational strategies to improve fluency in students is to help strengthen their emotional well-being and intrinsic motivation towards learning and positively impact their academic performance and reading skills. This makes these strategies fundamental in the educational context to support the comprehensive development of students.

Quantitative research is essential for advancing scientific knowledge, evidence-based decision making, and objective understanding of phenomena and relationships in a wide range of disciplines. Its importance focuses on the ability to provide objective and quantifiable data that can be analyzed and used to improve understanding and practice in the academic and professional field.

12.
