Introduction

During my academic career, both online and on-site, I have often reflected on the influence of three important factors that characterize the world of ballet: energy, physicality, and musicality. Especially the online learning has allowed me to concentrate fully both on my body and on my mind, even though this bad period has sometimes brought me sad and difficult moments, not allowing me to live my experience to the full.

By training, I learned that energy, physicality, and musicality have a clear connection with each other. In ballet these three factors are equally important, they are complementary and it is the three of them that make ballet possible in all its splendor. I tried to pay attention to the feelings I received during the classes, making connections between them and then creating a scheme that would recreate the whole process behind a single exercise such as pliès or tandu.

The exercise that firstly comes to my mind is the exercise we all do to start a ballet class, to prepare and warm up your body: the pliés. I first noticed that musicality is very important to obtain a successful pliès. For example, I did some research into the timing of ballet music, and I figured out that the plies can be danced with two different tempos. Tempo, at least in my case, totally changes the texture of the movement and the attitude. I tried to reproduce two videos example: the first reproduces an exercise with two-quarter time and the second an exercise with four-quarter time.

In this first video, I made a short pliés exercise in 2/4 time. The music is objectively much more dynamic than music in 4/4 time. This slight dynamism attributed to the music makes us work more unconsciously on the kind of pliés that helps us, that prepares us for the push to jump (I wrote "unconsciously" because music is not decided by us but by the teacher who has the power to decide what we should work on most. We unconsciously respond to the music that is given to us through training over the years which is now part of us). The dynamic pliés is important because without this feeling of energy the jumps cannot be performed correctly, we will not have the right charge to lift ourselves off the ground.

In this video, I used 4/4 time music instead. The tempo here is slower. Consequently, the movement will be visibly softer and we will work more on the depth of the pliés and not on the dynamism. A piece of slower and deeper music makes us focus more on the landing after a jump, on the right resistance that is needed to avoid getting injured during the descent from jumps and big movements

After this little explanation we can deduce that therefore musicality is linked to energy. Our energy varies according to the music and therefore at the same time our physicality also plays a related role. Our body state changes according to our energy and according to the music. We all have a moment or period with a bad body state that leads to a lack of energy..this has often happened to me during online classes

Opinion on the importance of ballet in contemporary dance

Taking advantage of these difficult times, I thought about how ballet has a strong influence on all other techniques such as contemporary dance. I've been studying ballet since I was 3 years old, and I think that if I hadn't started at such a young age, I wouldn't be at the level I am now. I've learned during my studies, that taking ballet classes strengthens our overall technique. I often feel lost when I don't take ballet classes, even during this online period. I have noticed that ballet helps me to emphasise the elasticity, shape and lightness of my body. Sometimes we are asked to abandon the canons of ballet, but unconsciously I have noticed that in reality, the knowledge of ballet only improves my movement. That is why I think ballet gives us the opportunity to be more versatile in the world of dance in general. Thanks to my ballet studies I feel that my body is constantly composed and defined . Especially when you are young, ballet helps you to define your lines and posture, so when you get to higher levels, as in our school, it is very important to have a well-established body. When you get a well-established body it is much easier to dissociate it, also with the help of the teachers. Ballet helps me a lot to focus also on the smallest details. That is why ballet and contemporary dance are so complementary.
