Facts

30% of people in Melbourne are Christian
21% of people living in Melbourne have no religion
7.7% of people who are living in Melbourne are Hindu
27% of people living in Melbourne are Muslim
There are over 600,000 Muslims living in Melbourne.

Conclusion:
we can see that Melbourne is a multi-religious city, that is growing very fast and that a majority of the population believe in a religion.

Main Idea:
Muslims face racial discrimination in Australia and Melbourne particularly all the time , but the Racial Discrimination Act has only a "limited" ability to protect Muslim Australians.

5 Facts:
1. Religious identity is not covered under the act.
2. Many other Australians also experience racial discrimination as a "constant feature" in the workplace, on the street and in the media.
3. More than 130 community, legal, university and government groups this year, uncovered that discrimination against Muslims was "consistently raised as [a] significant concern".
4. Muslim women were changing where they shopped due to discrimination
5. A group of Muslim musicians had cancelled a performance due to fears they would be attacked on public transport on the way there.

Conclusion:
Muslims need to be recognised under discrimination laws in order to be accepted into society.

What I already know about this topic is that it is very complicated and layered. Our ‘big question’ is the idea that ‘Are Muslims more subjected to discrimination than any other religious group?’ In this I already know that Muslims are subjected to much hatred and discrimination just because of the simple fact that they are Muslims. There are also right winged anti Muslim groups, yet is there any hate groups for Christians?

My opinions and attitudes towards this question is one of curiosity. I think that this could be quite interesting to learn and research about people’s different views on this topic and why they believe that. I myself believe that the Muslim population are quite nice and shouldn’t be demonized because a small minority in that community.

I predict that the answer will be that yes, people of Muslim faith are treated differently and we as people should try and eradicate it. To treat people differently sourly based upon the fact that they are of a different faith is purely horrid. These people are no different from us and we shouldn’t treat them differently, we don’t do this with Christians or Jews, so why do this?

In 2015 a study by the Western Sydney and Charles Universities surveyed around 600 Australian Muslims, some of the key facts that were found out are

57 per cent had experienced racism
62 per cent had experienced racism in the workplace or when seeking employment
1 in 10 Sydney Muslims had "very high" rates of exposure to racism
86 per cent believed relations between Australian Muslims and non-Muslims were friendly

Unemployment was higher among those surveyed (8.5 per cent) than the general Sydney population (3.7 per cent)
this demonstrates that Muslims are subjected to hate and racism.

Our groups Driving Question, ‘are Muslims subjected to more discrimination than any other religious groups?’ is a very current and sensitive issue. I have some knowledge of discrimination against Muslims due to the immense amounts of media coverage the topic receives. I am aware that Muslims are subjected to discrimination and are judged based on the stereotypes that exist in their culture. This stereotype is caused by the exposure in the media, where we base our opinions and judgments.

I believe that Muslims are subjected to more discrimination than any other religious group, one of the main reasons behind my opinion is that they gather much more negative media coverage. This then drives us to think that all of the Muslim population acts and thinks like the biased information we see and hear in the news.

I predict that the answer to this question will be, yes, Muslims are subjected to more discrimination than any other religious groups. I believe this because society are very aware of the Muslim culture, however may have a skewed idea on what they actually stand for. They are the main focus, majority of the time, in news articles and stories therefore we aren’t as aware of other religious groups. Therefore we can’t form an opinion as such on those other religious groups, causing us to place all our attention on Muslims.

Muslim Discrimination: Evidence From Two Lost-Letter Experiments

According to Ali M. Ahmed, 14 April 2010 the main idea about this subject is that Muslims are victims of discrimination. Facts that support this idea. They ran experiments where a letter was 'lost' with the address of a Muslim or Swedish person on it to see which ones would be returned back to determine the difference between the two. The results showed that the Muslims got back much less letters than the swedes, especially when there was money involved. In conclusion Ali M. Ahmed says that there is much proved, but also much to be learned about the topic.

What I already know about this question is that there is a decent population of Muslims in Melbourne. We know that there is discrimination to all faiths, including Muslims. Muslims are subjected to racism and hate from many people, but so do the other faiths.

I guess I am curious towards this question. I would like to find out more about this topic, and definitely know what our results are. I think that our question is an effective one that will not be too easy or too hard to answer and get results for.

I think that the result will be that Muslims in fact are subjected to more discrimination from the people of Melbourne and also

Our driving question is: are Muslims subjected to more discrimination than any other religious groups? I think that our topic is very sensitive after what has happened in the past and what is still happening. I believe that if we ask people around the street about this topic they might not answer what they actually think, I believe that they will censor their answers in fear that we might think that they are anti Muslim. The questions that I have towards this topic is that why to people censor their answers when asked about Muslims. I believe that the answer to this topic is that the reason that people censor their answer when asked about Muslims is because of the incidents that have happened in the past i.e. Sydney siege and also because of what is happening with Isis right now in the middle east.
