I have students do daily writing, and express the importance of using complete sentences in an academic setting. As a class we review what a whole sentence consists of, and give examples to students as to what would be a complete sentence for a question I pose, versus what would not be.

The students have a short reading with comprehension questions that go along with what we talk about each day. This helps students to deepen understanding of content while practicing their reading comprehension skills.

Reading short articles. Posting vocabulary that will be focused on at the beginning of the year and discussing vocabulary before and during readings. Using KWL charts to gauge students previous background knowledge and hopefully to pique interest of students. Focusing on essay writing aligned with ACCESS testing: narrative, informative, argumentative, and explanatory. In these writings they will focus on specific academic writing styles for each type of writing.
