The Sun Painting (Journal 2 Reference)

I painted this after leaving my sit spot inspired to do something I love (which for me today was painting). I enjoy reading tarot cards and the sun particularly resonates with me. It has a meaning of positivity, warmth and success. My interpretation is that the person on the horse is either guiding his horse with the ribbon or connecting with their inner child by playing with the ribbon. Or perhaps he's shooting a spear into the sun to harness its good energy. It's open to interpretation which makes it that much more powerful in my opinion.

I kind of wrote about how deteriorating land by fire or erosion can have ripple effects on the environment and this is another way that I found it illustrated very well.

These are my annotated notes for my research for February. This month I decided I would take a closer look at Norway's wilderness protection. The article albeit boring was important. It begins by examining what wilderness means in Norway and how Norway defines protected areas. Then it goes into details about how certain human interests affect these pledges to wilderness. For example, hydro electricity, roadways or cabin construction. It points out that although there isn't much legal basis for wilderness protection in Norway, it would set a dangerous precedent to abandon what legislation and regulations already do exist. Lastly it describes that due to a lack of legal basis combined with the high cost of Norwegian courts, there are few times that cases or impact statements are appealed or even tried to be appealed.

I came across this group that supposedly features 'morbid', dark history about national parks. Honestly, I probably won't ever listen to them again because they spent a lot of time talking about anything other than the topic and also their voices annoyed me. Regardless... this episode was interesting when they finally got around to sharing. It featured a story about a 1920's virus outbreak in Alaska and the race to get medicine delivered. It told the story of a man who took his pack of huskies with him to travel across Alaska to get to Anchorage. It was an interesting story and the journey was internationally recognized and dubbed "The Great Race for Mercy". I didn't mean to learn about Alaska but it lines up with things that we learned about in our Arctic course with John Ross, between the journeys across frozen lands by dog sled and the logistical errors or triumphs that followed suit. On a side note, I have Kimber (my dog) trained to pull me on skis as well.

Attached you'll find my annotated March research. This month, as you may recall from my journals, I decided to research plant stress due to a social media post I found that says plants experience pain or scream while being cut. This research report somewhat supports that claim. Plants do indeed "scream" when being cut or experiencing stress like drought. That does not equivocate to them experiencing pain in the animal/nervous system sense. However there should be more research done into this because it can help revolutionize agriculture. This research argues that it could save up to 50% of water expenditure and increase yield with dramatic economic implications if we continue to study plant sound emissions. These emissions can contain information that reveal the plants state and could signal other plants and organisms to respond to these sounds. They also produce another hypothesis that says that "if plants emit sounds in response to a caterpillar attack, predators such as bats could use these sounds to detect attacked plants and prey on the herbivores, thus assisting the plant".
I found this to be critical, important and interesting research into something probably not very often thought of. It could be research that has economical impact, as well as plant and ecosystem health impact.

This months media was as usual, credited to the National Park Service social media pages. This month I was being bothered by peers in my class that are purposely ignorant in regards to race issues, as well as other things that shouldn't be considered up for debate. That makes today's media that much more impactful to me. I've heard the argument more than once since being here that "since Norway didn't have slaves, it's not Norway's problem and it's not racist of them to say so".... I wish I was kidding. So here I am again returning to the same pressing matter that's been on my mind for weeks or months. Really since I've moved here and that I'm done being quiet about. This media highlights American slavery and an 'escape' from it. Yes of course slavery is an American issue, but it's everyone's issue if you ask me. Racism isn't just american or Norwegian or any other nationality problem. This media highlights the importance of the abolitionists aid to help others escape heinous crimes of slavery in America's Deep South. Through the Underground Railroad, many escaped to the North for freedom. This may seem less like wilderness thoughts but as I highlight in my first April journal, it is a human nature that is being explored. Plus it is an important piece of history being preserved, just like any wild area that might be in the publics interest to preserve.

As per usual, this months media comes from the National Park Service social media account. I'm sure I've mentioned it before but the Parks are my favorite place to volunteer for. Last summer I met my partner ((long distance now ): )) and she introduced me to the junior ranger program. Since then every time we get to spend time together, we make sure to go to at least one national park and get a junior ranger badge. It's a really unique program- albeit probably designed for kids. We are just really big kids at heart though. It has you take care of a book full of activities from lessons, picking up trash or imprinting leaves or drawing pictures of what you see. After you turn it into the ranger station and receive your junior ranger pin. So far we've collected Jekyll Island & Big Talbot Island state park

You can find my annotated notes attached. For this month's research I read about American transcendentalism. It's a topic I'm somewhat familiar with and very much enjoy studying. I think it's an important difference from other religions in America during or around the same time as the second great awakening. Both Emerson & Thoreau were the two greatest Transcedentalist artists and writers during this time. Through them we are able to understand art appreciation, nature and even industry in America during the 1800's. Emerson was especially interesting to me in this article because he implies that there is beauty in nature but it takes an artist to understand that. He also sees it as the artists responsibility to communicate that meaning with the masses.
Thoreau loved nature as an opposite to the world of commerce, politics and urbanization he was living in. He saw nature as a higher truth and believed he was wealthy by what he didn't have. For example, if I'm able to spend this year in Norway, I'm wealthy because I don't have work. Or I don't have to worry about my family back home. It's an interesting way to understand wealth that I very much appreciate. I hope that made sense.

This month I really spent a lot more time at my sit spot. Probably because the weather was so much nicer. In class we painted rocks for our class project, which I really enjoyed. I also made a riddle on the back of mine to find a tee-pee. I hope it sparks joy in whoever finds it. My time in Norway is coming to an end and to be honest I am in complete denial. I haven't brought a flight home yet because I'm not ready for it to be over. I think this class was one of my favorites because it felt like home. It was challenging enough to not bore me and I got to spend time de-stressing in nature. Watching the trees go from naked to the small blooms they have growing now and feeling the weather switch from freezing cold to shorts weather has been my favorite thing. I am a summer girl and Im so excited my favorite season is upon us. This month I also applied to a few internships including one doing plastics research with the United Nations, so fingers crossed I get that. Classes like this and John Ross's really helped prepare me for a future career and helped me understand my passions.

I chose this podcast for two reasons. One, I saw on Ingrid's Padlet that this was one of the podcasts she used. I used a different episode though. She and I usually have similar taste so I figured I'd enjoy it.
While looking through the descriptions of different podcasts, this was the one that stuck out to me. It talked about big foot. The reason this stood out was because every time I go to Florida, along I81 I always see signs for Big Foot this or that in GA. I also recently joined a few southern GA Facebook groups with anticipation to move to the area next year and I'd be damned, there were a bunch of people that believed in Big Foot. So, I'll update this with a comment after I listen to the podcast.
