Senator Phillip Reed of Maryland. He proposed this amendment because some people were upset when Betsy Patterson from Maryland married Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother and want a royal title from France for her son and herself. This would have controversial at the time because the American Revolution had just happened and the U.S. was against monarchy.

This amendment passing would not affect most people in the United States. It seemed more important during this historical time because the U.S. was concerned with preventing nobility from having influence on their new democracy. It would affect Luann de Lesseps from the Real Housewives of NYC because she uses the title "Countess" a royal title she got from her French ex-husband - if she continued using this title her U.S. citizenship would be revoked even though she was born here.

I don't think this amendment should be passed because our democracy is no longer in danger from monarchy and it would be a lot of effort to pass an amendment that doesn't affect the majority of people living in the U.S. I don't think it would be harmful if this amendment were passed, however, I think we should focus on passing amendments that actually promote the general welfare of people living in the United States. This amendment feels trapped in this past and no longer relevant to us.
