Father to Hermia and married her to Demetreus and is now outraged that she has fallen in love with Lysander and attempts to stop their union.

In act 3 he falls in love with Helena due to the love potion being mistaken for Demetrius.

Competes with Demetrius' for Helenas love until he is given the antidote to the love spell.

"I am, my Lord, as well derived as he, As well possess'd; my love is more than his; my fortunes every way as fairly rank'd, if not with vantage, as Demetrius"(1.1, 103-106)

In Act 3 he comes under the effects of the love spell and falls back in love with Helen although she thinks its a ploy to make a mockery of her. He fights Lysander (Also under love spell) for Helena's love.

Although Lysander is cured of the love spell, Demetrius is not and stays in love with Helena for the whole play.

"Relent, sweet Hermia; and , Lysander, yield they crazd title to my certain right."(1.1, 95-96)

In the third act Lysander and Demetrius (both under love spells) fall for her and pursue her. She believes that she is being mocked by them and Hermia

She makes a speech of her and Hermia's broken friendship leading them to fight.

Eventually they all wake up believing it to be a dream and she gets with Demetrius and they get married.

"Wherefore was I to this keen mockery born?
When at your hands did I deserve this scorn?
Is ’t not enough, is ’t not enough, young man,
That I did never, no, nor never can,
Deserve a sweet look from Demetrius’ eye,
But you must flout my insufficiency?"(2.2, 124-129)

"Is all the counsel that we two have shared,
The sisters’ vows, the hours that we have spent
When we have chid the hasty-footed time
For parting us? Oh, is all forgot?"(3.2, 200-203)

Theseus' keeps trying to one up Hippolyta as if to prove himself better than her although she quickly corrects this behavior.

Hippolyta seems happy with the marriage after act 3 and warms up to Theseus

"Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
Draws on apace. Four happy days bring in
Another moon. But, oh, methinks how slow
This old moon wanes. She lingers my desires,
Like to a stepdame or a dowager
Long withering out a young man’s revenue"(1.1, 1-6)

Although protesting this union at first she warms up to Theseus and is happy with the marriage.

Introduced in act 1 and her marriage with Theseus is one of the overarching plots.

"Four days will quickly steep themselves in night;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time"(1.1, 7-8)

One of the most influential figures in the play.

Places love potion on Demetrius and Lysander.

Gives the antidote to Lysander

"What hempen home-spuns have we swagg'ring here, so near the cradle of the fairy queen? What, a play toward! I'll be an auditor; An actor too perhaps, if I see cause"(3.1, 65-68)

"Lord, what fools these mortals are!"(3.2, 117)

Nick Bottom accepts this love and grows more egotistical

When Titania is given the antidote she falls out of love with Nick Bottom and he is re-turned to a human state believing it was all a dream

He returns to the mechanicals and does the play for the nobles in act V

"That will ask some tears in the true performing of it. If I do it, let the audience look to their eyes; I will move storms;I will condole in some measure. To the rest: yet my chief humor is for a tyrant. I could play Ercles rarely, or a part to tear a cat in, to make all split."(1.2, 18-21)

"I have a device to make all well. Write me a prologue; and let the prologue seem to say we will do no harm with our swords, and that Pyramus is not kill'd indeed; and for the more better assurance, tell them that I Pyramus am not Pyramus, but Bottom the weaver. This will put them out of fear."(3.1, 15-20)

Nick is very egotistical believing himself to be a master actor

Him along with the other Mechanicals are the more comedic part of the play with their fun/odd personalities and simple mindedness
