joy and sadness meet bing bong (mentor) who was riley's imaginary friend when she was younger. he suggests a dangerous shortcut called abstract thought.

crossing the first threshold

joy and sadness meet bing bong for the first time. this initiates their journey to retrieve the memories. imaginary land is a location within riley's mind with the theme park and various attractions inside.

tests, allies, and enemies

joy and sadness try and scare riley out of her dreams because the train of thought only runs when riley's awake and thats their transportation to find rileys memories. while they are trying to do that they are thrown in a jail with a clown (shadow) and need to escape.

approach to the inmost incave

joy and bing bong fall into the forgotten memories when they are trying to retrieve the core memories and they cannot get out. forgotten memories are where faded memories are thrown into a pile and eventually they disappear and are forgotten about. this is when joy realizes the importance of sadness in Riley's life.

joy and bing bong attempt to use the magic wagon to get out of forgotten memories, and at the last moment bing bong jumps off so that joy can succeed. this is the turning point for both characters because it shows bravery bing bong has to be forgotten by riley to have joy succeed her mission.

reward

joy reunites with sadness after she uses the magic wagon to get out of forgotten memories and they get back to headquarters. they discover that anger has disabled the console, causing Riley not to be apathetic. joy hands control of the console over to sadness, who is able to reactivate the console and she prompts Riley to return home.

the road back

Riley returns home to her parents and confesses that she misses Minnesota. joy and sadness work the console together, creating a new core memory combining both emotions. A new island is created representing Riley's acceptance of her new life in San Francisco.

resurrection

a year later, Riley has adapted to her new home in San Francisco, by making new friends, returning to her old hobbies, and making new ones. at the headquarters the emotions are all working together on a new expanded console.

return with the Elixir

Riley now lives a more complex life and realizes that she needs sadness in her life in order to bring her joy, and the emotions realize this as well.
