"When George Floyd was brutally killed by a police officer kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes while three other police officers looked on, it resulted quite rightly in protests that have rapidly spread around the world." (Storey, p.201) This commercial was made in 2017, before the murder of George Floyd, but goes to show that police brutality is not a new thing. Although the Pepsi marketing teams hearts were in the right place, this was not the way to execute their message. Kendall Jenner, a white privileged model, solves racism by handing a police officer a Pepsi at a Black Lives Matter protest. "In terms of the population of the world white people do not make up a significant number. Yet in terms of power and privilege they are the dominant colour." (Storey, p.199) And Jenner is just that...a privileged white woman. The idea that a white woman can single-handedly solve racism with a soda is harmful and contributes to the problem. "The history of these people exists elsewhere, and it is not the statues but the protests about the statues that is making it visible; a history of slavery and imperialism
that as a country we have refused to acknowledge." (Storey, p.202) Many generations of pain and fighting were erased in this ad..simply reduced to a can of pop.
