I can support my answer a few ways. One way I can support my answer is that really, the royal personal never asked for money, or gold in return from the explorer. And that wouldn't make sense anyways, because the explorers were getting money from the royals. The text also sais that royals wanted new land and trade routes for them and their country. 
One other piece of evidence that supports my answer is the fact that more people might want to move too the new land that the royals claimed, so their country would become bigger.
