Most of my friends and I have not had too much experience with cyber-bullying, since our generation didn't have social media or smartphones during high school. I'm sure it is much more frequent now. I did have one friend that belonged to forums where they discussed current events and politics. They ended up receiving lots of bad messages and spam at one point. It resulted in them leaving all the forums and social media for a while and it seemed to solve the problem. Eventually they were able to re-join the internet/social media but I think they stayed away from the forum that started it all.

Yes, several of my students talk about how they were cyberbullied. However, one case was actually handled in school because a student was being bullied in school and cyberbullied by the same student. I know the principal used the cyberbullying policy and the student was suspended and it was reported to the local authorities.

I worked for 7 years in a middle school and cyberbulling was a huge problem. Part of the problem was the age of the students. It was their first experience with smartphones and many had social media accounts. Snapchat played a big role in the bullying because students were sending inapporiate pictures to each other and they were screenshoting and saving the pictures. We had to get the local police involve and the issue had to be handled by the Board of Education.
The school now has great policies in place to deal with sitituations like this one and they now have a strong digital citizenship curriculum

I make sure everyone leaves the class knowing that what they say online can always be screenshotted and printed. If a student ever reported cyberbullying to me then I would report it to the principal.

I don't know of anyone personally who was cyber-bullied, but I watched a situation online recently turn into cyberbulling and full-blown doxxing. Last week, someone posted a video on a people who love to visit Block Island Facebook account of a Block Island landmark that had been "defaced." Members of the group jumped all over the poster, calling for him to be arrested, starting posting pictures of his kids, the number to his job encouraging him to be fired. It was so inappropriate, and our local press had to address it because it was so out of control.

I don't know anyone that has been cyberbullied but I have about situations from friends in the school system. I know that social media ia a big problem when it comes to bullying because everything puts the information online and its a terrible situation. Many many years ago, two students in town took their own lives because of this situation and it should never lead to that opinion.

While I don't know anyone who has been cyberbullied, all one has to do is check out the comment section of most popular media sites to see examples of it. It's one thing to make a joke here and there in good fun, but being deliberately malicious is downright uncalled for. To that end the best way I've seen is to ignore those types of comments; don't give them the satisfaction of getting a rise out of you.

A lot of the teens where I work have been cyberbullied. The bullying follows them home from school. One student in particular was getting bullied so severely his mom wound up opting to homeschool both of her kids. Based on what kids have told me, bullying doesn't often get addressed when it happens outside of school. There are assemblies, character ed sessions etc about not doing it and consequences for in school, but it's hard for administrators, guidance counselors, therapists, etc to keep up with everything that happens outside their "jurisdiction", now that bullying is moving online.

I personally haven't experienced cyberbullying nor do I know anyone who has, but it is something that is always on my radar being a mom to two tween/teen kids. Both of my children have cell phones, but we have established rules around them to help prevent (hopefully) cyberbullying. Both of my kids have been educated on the consequences of cyberbullying or being a bystander. They also know that they need to come to my husband or myself if anything ever happens online that makes them feel upset or threatened. Additionally, we have a rule about charging phones in the kitchen at night and that mom and dad can look at their messages or social media whenever we like.

Nobody has every admitted to me that they were cyber-bullied, but I have certainly seen plenty of nastiness on online forums that probably rose to nearly that level, which is part of why I stay away from social media and most forums now. I know they have had assemblies at my daughter's school, but my kids tend to try not to worry me and are afraid I will take away their devices. (No phone = problem solved? Not that simple, unfortunately!) But it's on the news constantly, including the girlfriend who was just convicted of her boyfriend's death after inciting him to suicide. It's scary.

The way my brother found out about it is that the kid who was being bullied ended up hitting my brother at school. It escalated to the point where the school had to do an intervention/mediation.

Also, one of my best friends from childhood, whose daughter is now in high school, experienced bullying and cyberbullying for about three years. It was awful to watch. Even after the school and parents intervened, it continued all through middle school. Strangely, it has all gone away in high school. Middle School is a tough age, indeed, so perhaps they are simply maturing?
