"This was one of the hardest days of my childhood. My mother had become ill during the holidays, but continued to fight it off. At the time I was unaware of what was truly happening, she had cancer. I was only 7 at the time while my brothers we both working and married in our town. Instead of my mother coming to pick me up, my oldest brother was there to get me. He had a look of sadness and bags under his eyes. It was then he told me that our mother had died. I had not idea the life change that was coming my way following her funeral."

Welcome to America

Following my mothers funeral, I was told I would be living with my aunt in America. Knowing no English or person besides my aunt and cousin fear filled my body as I got on the ship. It felt like forever and that this boat ride was never going to end. Looking back coming to America was the best possible thing for my life to turn out how it did. Learning English was definitely a learning curve. So not only do I have my nice thick German accent, I also got some Jersey tones as well.

My First Real Job

While my family in New Jersey could get by, we did not live a life where college was an option to me. Out of high school I worked in a bridal shop in New York City. Getting the dresses out, helping people change, and hopefully putting a smile on their face.

In a german bakery, I met the man that would one day be my husband. He tried to charm me by buying my coffee and speaking German, but I wasn't going to make getting a date with me easy.

My Second Job

My husband was given the option to help run a VW dealership in San Fransisco. While scary to leave what we knew, was also the adventure of a lifetime. I started working as a receptionist at the dealership.

Travel Whenever Possible

Moving across the country made the urge to go new places even stronger. It helped show me how to save money for experiences rather than items. I began to plan small weekend trips with friends to simply see new places. This has not really stopped and as I have gotten older has only increased in frequency.

Our Current Home

Moving to Arizona came very quick after moving to California. We ended up only being there for 2 years and have been in Arizona ever since. My husband was given the option to own his own Mercedes dealership, which felt like fate as we are both very proud German immigrants.

The Best Job I Ever Had

Being a mom was something that made me feel whole and very proud. I only have ever wanted the best for my sons and they have made wonderful lives for themselves.

Driving

I was always able to get by without a car and driving, but after having my second son I finally got around to getting my license. This is something that has been a prized possession on mine. Having the freedom and ability to drive was such a liberating feeling.

Colorado Adventures

Having an accent...

Being an immigrant was hard due to the cultural change, but even after adjusting people have still looked down on me. Due to sounding a different way people don't think I understand or comprehend what they are saying the same way someone else my age without an accent does. It is an area that often times causes frustration and something I work strongly to prove incorrect. Having patience with all people is important in any stage, so why should an accent change this.

The Top of my Bucket List

Something I have always dreamed about was seeing the Northern Lights. I have been to Iceland a handful of times but still never been able to see them. This past summer I went back and finally checked off the top of my travel bucket list. Doing this made childhood me melt inside. This was something which my brothers and I always talked about. Even though they were unable to come with me, it felt right to finally see this marvel.

Your Body is Your Temple

Recently I have noticed my body slowing down and needing a little more aid. Pilates is helping me feel better both mentally and physically as I age. This have been a great way to socialize and meet more people in my direct area.

South Korean Soaps

Other cultures to me have been facinating and learning the ways of them is something I try to do more of each year. Recently South Korean soaps are my current addiction. They have showed different cultural aspects and helped me learn some Korean along the way. Learning in any way is so so important!

Graduations

I never had the opportunity to continue school and the very most rewarding aspect of my life is seeing my children and grandchildren have this privilege. Creating a life where this was available to them was important to both me and my husband. In doing so I have watched over 15 graduations from high school to masters in college. Teaching them to always strive to learn is the greatest lesson in life.

Being "Old"

The world likes to make you think that being old means all the fun parts of life end, wrong wrong wrong! Being retired has given me the opportunity to spend time with family and friends as well as travel to experience new things. There are parts of aging that are not as fun like illness and death of friend, but there are still so many positives to be seen.

Don't let the little moments in life pass you by. So often we get swept up with being on the go and making sure to appreciate all life has to offer us is something I have worked on especially as I have gotten older. I think though this is something that is easier to do now that I am older because I realize much more how special things are. A different level of appreciation sets in as when you have more time to think about it.

We live in a world that is very hot and cold with each other. While there are many views I do not agree with, showing everyone compassion is something I think should be universal. Not everyone is going to agree on things but giving people the space to choose how and who they spend their life with should be something we all take part in.
