The unusual concepts hint towards world problems such as poverty, damage to the earth, human conflict etc. The video works together with the lyrics which include ‘fixing things up’ and trying to solve problems; a very positive message in contrast to the video showing the problems. A deeper meaning in reflected throughout the song and video about a world, not too dissimilar to our own that is broken and damaged with hunger and greed. The video also shows the band playing on the world as huge giants that are interacting with the world, such as leaning against mountains etc. 

The genre is set through visual metaphors that indicate the global issues and controversial subjects.The genre of Up&Up is Alternative/Indie.  The relationship between the lyrics and visuals of this song has been thought about well as there isn’t much of a narrative. This emphasises the meaning of the song to its audience. The lead singer Chris Martin is the main character in this video, this may be to represent the fact that Martin is telling the message of the song directly to the audience.

The appeal is created through the pure use of ‘Computer Generated Imagery’ and Manipulation of film to combine two clips into one abstract reality. This one characteristic is repeated throughout the video and is used on its own and creates the video's style. Every camera angle and movement is used, because of the huge variety of shots and effects

The videos narrative is a direct illustration of the lyrics, starting with a boy and a new pair of shoes. The narrative links to the lyrics such as lines, “mom, I touched the net!”, which depicts the boy jumping towards the basketball hoop. The video continues with this narrative that generally follows the lyrics. One part of Ben Haggerty’s rap, the video goes black and white, which reflects the way Ben is looking back at his life in a nostalgic way. However the present is in black and white and the past is in technicolour, which may reflect the fact that Ben prefers the old days or sees the past as a much better life than now.
