Kings and Queens inherited their power of the greatest lords by birth. They built humongous castles and had quite a bit of land that they split up between themselves and their vassals. Their vassals were nobles and knights. When they gave their vassals land, the vassals had to promise to give the king or queen their protection, including food and shelter if needed.

Nobles were vassals of the king as well as lords of lower ranking nobles and knights. They gave their lords money and protection in return for land. They also gave their lords money on special occasions and shelter if needed. Their vassals then gave them money and protection. Nobles would always be nobles, but they can become a more powerful lord by obtaining more land.

Knights also served and fought for lords in exchange for land, but they, unlike the nobles, were not lords themselves. They wore suits of armor, fought on horseback, and followed chivalry. They could except fiefs, or land, from many different lords, which made the feudal system confusing, and their live harder because they had to give protection, food and shelter, for all their lords.

Peasants owned no land, they lived and farmed on their lords land, which made them off limits to the feudal system. They were serfs, or people tied to their lords land, making them unable to leave. They were not formally educated in forms such as reading and writing and cared for themselves and their lord. They payed their lord taxes and lived a very boring life in general.

Lords owned manors, which were self sufficient areas of land that were used during the Middle Ages. These manors contained one large house or castle for the lord, one church, fields, water sources, a mill, a blacksmith shop, and small one room, dirt floor houses for the serfs. The lord controlled taxes on his manor and was able to claim someone a wolfs head. On the lords manor, his word was law.

Around the year 1000, towns started to appear. This caused the population to grow and trade to increase. Knights started wanting money instead of land and the Crusades led people to leave their manors for towns. This happened because knights were scarce during war time and peasants were asked to become temporary knights. After experiencing the world the peasant didn't want to go back to their manors.
