I came into the show thinking it would be a hurrah or a validation for the modern Psychobitches like myself, and at first, it was! Sindhu was so enjoyable to watch and she embodied that high-flying, well-adjusted-but-probably-with-high-functioning-anxiety modern woman.

But as the show wore on, I became quite concerned that it revolved around a man and impressing him and his circle. Watching this with my girlfriends, I was also deeply troubled that Anya doesn’t have any friends she could confide in; what would I do without my female-friendships! With the eventual reveal, I was most disappointed that it undermined all of her self-work.

As much as I was disappointed and frustrated in the sculpting of Anya’s journey, it made for great conversations with friends and introspection into my own insecurities thereafter. And not forgetting Aditi Shivaramakrishnan’s incisive response, a critical work of art in itself.

I think it’s an example of how a show can be unsatisfying but “good” in its impact and engagement. Anybody else feel the same way?

2023 marks exactly ten years since my weedy 15-year-old self watched three fantastic productions in a year, and during a curtain call in Esplanade Theatre Studio, decided she wanted to make theatre her life and she never wanted to do anything else. Well, she didn't, and she's really glad about it, haha! It's been a long journey to get here and I've got a long way to go too, and I can't wait for every second of it to come.

Also, according to the Turkeys' funky little calculator, I have watched 25% of the local productions staged this year. When you think about it, that's a lot!!! I'm super pleased with myself :p - adey
