Multi-genre is important for the student to grow as a writer. They also will take what they have learned from their various writings and transfer that knowledge into all subjects. Of the eight principles of classroom based literacy assessment, a few stood out clearly to me. Assessment must be an ongoing process, assessment is bet when it is multi-dimensional, & assessments should be developmentally and culturally appropriate.

While so much has been built into what each student is assessed on in reading, math and the sciences, it is sad that writing had taken a back seat for so long. As we have learned through this class, there is writing that takes place across the curriculum. It is noteworthy for us to make sure that we are. working with our students on their writings no matter what subject is being taught. Growth can only happen when consistency surrounding writing emphasis takes place.

Make it a priority to have students write in a “journal” every day. Begin by introducing a specific genre and ask them to write on that daily. Help them master one thing before moving onto the next. By the end of the year, all standards of writing will have been met and students will have beautiful portfolios to show their growth.

Throughout the entire process making sure that there is plenty of feedback is vital. Students need to know what it is they are doing right and where their challenges lie. It’s okay to give feedback that isn’t what they want to hear as long as the feedback is done so constructively and with a good heart. After a student has worked on their writings, give them time to edit their writings themselves. Also allow other students to give their feedback. Sometimes hearing from a peer makes a bigger impact on the student. Making sure to guide the students during each step though is critical. Give them time to reflect and edit over and over if necessary.

To complete the process, it is important for us as teachers to self-reflect as well. Make sure we are as honest with how we delivered our expectations on what the assignment was, given appropriate feedback and help them cross the finish line, then we’ve done our job. Unfortunately, though, that isn’t always the case. We may think we are giving clear directions, but in reality we have a bunch of lost and confused kiddos. Take the time to figure out where we can improve and the end result for both students and teacher will be a win-win.
