We will be exploring the impact SRP has on our water systems in Arizona. More specifically where does our water come from and how does our water system work. Our third graders will learn ways SRP helps and impacts the environment while understanding how water is processed and how we can help. Children will be able to draw a model that shows where water passes through before exiting the tap. I chose this topic because our water is limited and people need to be made aware as young as possible. If drastic changes aren't made soon our lives will begin to be effected by the ongoing water crisis. I will connect this to the children's interest be ensuring they understand that when they are adults it will be their lives that will be effected by the lack of water. They will be adults watching animals and plants go extinct due to lack of water.

Today we will review the water cycle. Children will make connections to what they know and what they are about to learn. We will review the water cycle by creating a class model. Children will be broken up into small groups. Each group will be assigned a stage in the water cycle (precipitation, evaporation, etc.) The children will then have a few minutes in their group to write a small summary on what their stage means (precipitation is the process of moisture falling from the sky such as rain etc) The class will then be given 5 minutes to align themselves around the room as the water cycle. The front of the room representing the sky. Once the groups are placed we will go around and review each stage of the water cycle. We will have each group read their summary so all children get the same review information. Once we have completed this we will discuss connection questions such as:
1. How does this cycle effect the amount of rain we have in Arizona?
2. If it doesn't rain often how do we get our water?
3. Can we run out of water?
These types of questions will give the children something to ponder for the night and make the connections to the next day. The teacher will guide the discussion to the use of water treatment plants and where our tap water comes from. This will serve as an introduction to the lesson

Today we will discuss human made water cycles. This will involve where does water go once it goes down the drain all the way back around to when it once again comes from the tap. We will start the day by asking students what they already know about the man made cycle. We will list their knowledge on the board for future reference. Next we will begin the lesson. Students will be given a handout asking leading questions regarding the water treatment process and will be broken up into pairs. They will then be allowed to research the answers to the questions using in class technology. The handouts will be turned in for a grade however it will only be a completion grade. Once the children are done researching we get back together as a class and discuss the answers. We will then refer back to the children's prior knowledge and use that to blend with the new knowledge to list the water treatment process.

Now that the children understand the water process we will discuss how natural water contributes to that. Things such as rain fall, rivers, and lakes. Where does this water come from and how does it benefit us? For today's lesson the students will be watching educational videos. I have attached videos below. There will a handout for the children to fill out that follows along with the videos. This way they can take notes and we can ensure they get the information needed from the videos.
How trees help (4.5 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbZvOL0dgyU
Different sources of water (6.5 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMAR0jFhp7E
Human impact on water (10.5 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA993iU06cI
It's important to pause the videos often and discuss the important topics of the videos. The videos are learning tools not the full lesson so the teacher needs to supplement the videos with group discussion and connection making. It's important to guide the children in discussion to make the connections from the videos to to content from the prior days. Again the handouts will be submitted for a progress grade. They will be used to chack understanding and as such will receive a completion grade.

Today we will spend most of the day connecting what we have learned to SRP. We will find how SRP is involved and what impact they have on our water. This will be completed by breaking the children in to groups of 4 or 5. Each group will be assigned one of the following websites:

The Whys Behind Changes in Your Water bill: https://amwua.wordpress.com/category/central-arizona-project/
SRP Site, mainly water, community, and about us tabs (split the reading between 2 groups): https://www.srpnet.com/
How SRP provides water: https://www.srpwater.com/
AZCentral article: https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona/2014/09/28/arizona-water-scarcity-contest/16378517/
AZ.Gov site:  http://www.azwater.gov/azdwr/StatewidePlanning/WaterAtlas/ActiveManagementAreas/PlanningAreaOverview/WaterSupplySurfaceWater.htm
Cuty of Phoenix site:  https://www.phoenix.gov/waterservices/resourcesconservation/drought-information

They will then be given time to read the sites and list ways that SRP impacts or water supply on a large sheet of paper. Once each group has their list completed we will hang them around the room and do a gallery walk. The children will be encouraged to take notes as we will discuss the items listed as a group. Once they have rotated the room we will discuss what we seen and how we feel about SRP's impact on our water system.

Once we have completed that activity we will discuss the final lesson for the next day. The next day the children will be building a model of the water system. They can do a diagram from clay, or draw the cycle on poster board, or list the steps/stages our in bullet points. The choice will be theirs so I want to discuss the general idea with them so they know what to expect. I will let them know that there will be a number of materials provided and the choice is theirs.

As the final assessment children will be expected to make a display of the water process. The teacher will provide a wide variety of materials such as clay, markers, poster board, legos, paint, pipe cleaners, paper clips, hangers, etc. The students will be broke into groups of 3 and then will work as a team to make an idea for their model. Once they have an outline they can then pick the materials they think they will need and will get the rest of the class to make the model. It is expected that the model includes the following steps:

Drain -----> Sewer----->Water treatment plant/reservoir----->
                                                                  remove sediments-----> filtration----->disinfection----->distribution

The children can add additional information such as rain water being added to the reservoir or combined or separate sewer systems but these steps will be what they are graded on. At the end of class children will turn in their models to be displayed around the room.
