The cause of contamination at Spark hill Creek are failing septic systems, leaky sewers, improper sewage treatment, pump station malfunctions during rain events, and runoff. This causes environmental problems because organic matter and nutrients stimulates plane and algae growth, which in turn reduces oxygen levels in the water, and then fish and other aquatic animals could suffocate.

This problem of pollution in Sparkill creek has been going on for decades, and there is little sign of the creek getting much cleaner. A 1992 Village of Piermont study describes sewer lines that "periodically stink and overflow".

How has feeding relationships changed from water pollution?

Feeding relationships have changed from water pollution because pollution disrupts the natural food chain. Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be disrupted at all higher levels because more and more of these animals are dying.

Some things that people could do to fix water pollution is practice responsible use of Fertilizer, Herbicides, and Pesticides, minimize storm water runoff, filter runoff, contain spills, protect curb inlets and drains, capture and dispose of floating pollution in waterway, capture and filter sediment laden water in waterways, and much more!!

Why these solutions would work

The solutions listed would decrease water pollution because all of those things contaminate water and can kill the organisms in it, so if they were stopping being put in the water, rivers would become less contaminated and less organisms would die. The reason those organisms would die if those things were put into the river is because they are localized, suffocate fish, caught in birds or mammals, and block light from photosynthetic plants in the water.
