When some students seem to provide an answer or explanation more quickly than others, routinely ask those fast finishers to show you “another way.” What’s another way you can get that answer? What’s another explanation for the result? What’s another way to explain what happened? Challenge them to think of new ideas that are even BETTER than their first; this is a great way to build growth mindsets!

RAFT Writing

Use the RAFT strategy to differentiate instruction and to promote creative thinking. Assign (or have students choose) a Role, an Audience, the Format, and the Topic. For example, you may have students present a Topic that is related to the investigation question, and students might choose to play the Role of a newscaster, present in the Format of a cartoon, and pretend their Audience are parents.

What Else Do You Know?

Not everything that students know is on the test. Finish every assessment by asking, “What else do you know about this topic -- that isn’t on this test?” in order to suss out the diverse understandings your multitalented students possess!

Stars and Stairs is a great strategy for clearly communicating learning targets and learning pathways. Start by specifying a learning continuum, starting with more basic and foundational skills, and moving toward more complex and contingent skills. As students demonstrate mastery of each skill, give them a star and guide them to focus on mastering the next skill in the sequence.

SMART Goals

Help students take ownership of their learning by helping them craft SMART goals. For a particular objective, support students in setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Specific and Actionable: Focus on qualities of the work, not the person. Grades/comments with no focus on improvement are not actionable. Also, provide students with time to fix it up!

B+ Exemplars

Students learn by observing models and by critiquing the work of others. So save or create a "B+ Exemplar " of how a project or assignment might look. Have students identify why the exemplar did well (it did, after all, receive a B+), as well as how it could be improved to earn that "A." When students make these observations themselves, they take greater ownership, and their learning sticks in a more durable way!

Coopetitions

Competition can motivate students, but it can also cause all sorts of problems. Get the benefits without the drawbacks by having your class collaborate to do something as well as possible. For instance, instead of having students race to finish their fact sheet first, ADD everyone's times and post the total on the wall. Then, next time, you can see if your class can beat their previous record. Students will support each other and cheer each other on as they strive to do their best... together!

Relevant Elephant

Want to know how your learning might be relevant to the lives of your students? Ask them! Post a large (2'x3') elephant picture on your wall. Then, tack on a piece of paper with a topic you're studying. Tell your students you're afraid that what you're learning might be "irrelephant," and challenge them to come up with ways it might be useful now or in the future. By shifting frames to let your students argue for relevance, you increase buy-in and find out new ways your learning might be meaningful!
