four strategies

~ fostering a positive learning environment- showing the students you want them in your room, and you are there to help

~ get as much information from the student and family are the beginning of the year and before so you can plan your lessons to include everyone's culture- have them answer a questionnaire or do a beginning of the year project telling everyone about themselves

~ adjust your planned lessons to fit your current class- add in lessons on their culture or however it fits into what you are teaching about. Or have them teach a lesson on it themselves.

~ make sure everyone feels welcomed and wanted in your room- be excited to meet everyone and be excited that they are in your room.

~~ celebrate special holidays for your students along with the ones everyone else does, like Chinese New Year or Hanukkah.

~~ change up your room depending on what is going on at time of year with your students- Hanukkah decorate your room instead of for Christmas

strategies

~ be involved in the community, go to events, like our second Fridays or community clean up, parents will see you out and about and feel more comfortable

~ build trust with the families and community- be open and honest and answer any questions

~ be the bridge to get families the resources they need, our community has a care closet anyone can go in and get clothes or shoes.

~ get the community involved in the schools, students can and will learn more when it comes from someone new or someone they know from outside of school. There are different ways like having elders come in and read or tell them some stories of their past, or have the students go out into their community and do a cleanup or do something that needs done, like mowing yards or cleaning up the parks.

~~ do a school wide cleanup of your community

~~ make sure parents know about workshops that your school sponsors
