The cotton gin made it so that southern farmers could produce cotton more productively. After the creation of the cotton gin, it was quicker and easier to produce cotton. However, the cotton gin increased slave labor in the South and slaves often worked to death.
Why would the North like the protective tariff while the South would not?
The protective tariff was an import tax on goods purchased abroad that was created to increase American manufacturing. Most Northerners were happy about the tariff because it protected the U.S. from British competition. However Southerners did not want to tax European imports because they did not depend on manufacturing. The South was more focused on agriculture while the North was more focused on factories and producing goods. The South had less access to getting American goods. The South was also purchasing slaves.
