This concept in music is important because it is what makes the listener more emotionally attached or connected to a piece of work by an artist. Ratliff argued that If the artist is able to let the song seem open ended and slowed down and sung with raw emotion, it is more likely that a song will resonate with more individuals. I picked this one because there seems to be different characteristcs between the instrumental and Frankie Beverly, the vocalist. The instrumental seems to be more jazzy and a nice chill backdrop to what the artist is singing. What the artist is singing is more blusey in nature and he disscusses the uncertainty of the nature of his relationship with the girl he just had an affair with. The slowness of the song and the drawing out of the notes help to keep the raw emotion in the piece. I picked this song because it has a nice instrumental accompaniment to go along with Legend. Legend's lyrics are specific, yet vauge, leaving room for a wide range of different people to relate to the words he is singing. He does not try and make the song speed up unnecessarily, he keeps it nice and flowy. The simple one instrument accompaniment also keeps the song less busy and it makes it more personal. John Legend gets to a part in the song where he begins to ask a lot of questions that shows his uncertainty of the future and he doesn't necessarily answer these questions, he instead states that, "We're just ordinary people, we don't know which way to go. We're just ordinary people, we just need to take it slow."
