He takes Lenina on a ride in his helicopter and hovers just above the water and stares out at the Ocean with Lenina is the co-pilot seat. At this moment, he make Lenina feel awkward and she questions his odd attitude toward something as simple as the ocean. Bernard believes in individuality and freedom. He disagrees with the Utopian life he lives in and wants to be free. Watching the ocean makes him feel at peace and he tries to show Lenina this. Bernard says "It makes me feel as though... I were more of me... more on my own," (90). Bernard hates being just a small cell in the entire social body. Because he is different from those in his caste (he is shorter, hairier, discontent, and finds many of the practices of his society to be unnatural) he feels that he is alone. He values individuality and organic emotion, things that are taboo in the public eye. He is hypocritical in these values because while he claims to be for individuality he resents his own individuality. He believes that strong emotions are good, but he lets his emotions both enable his own pitfalls, like when he egged on the director because he felt like he was invincible, and then his heart sank when hearing the consequences of his actions. His own emotions also lead him to feel like an outcast because he fails to fit in as well as all of the other members of society do. This insecurity creates a positive feedback loop for him to alienate himself further from his community by acting more awkward as he distances himself further from the norms. He knows that the life that he and everyone is suppose to be living is not how it should be. He is lonely in the thoughts and feelings he has about wanting to appreciate life more and have commitment to other things and people. He is also physically different than other alphas in that he is shorter and hairier than others. Bernard knows that the utopia they are living in is not really free. We can see with his interaction on the helicopter with Lenina that we longs for someone who shares those feelings he has. Although Bernard does have more individual thoughts than others he still shows signs of the brainwashing that has been pushed on them since childhood.
