I once read a poem from an author, it was so long ago that I forgot his name. He was an incarcerated Black man in the South some time ago, childless and alone. He used this metaphor describing Salmon swimming upstream to lay eggs safely for the sake of their offspring. He concentrated on the sacrifice that it takes to leave a legacy, to be remembered...the offspring would undoubtedly be an achievement of permanence- eternity. This permanence he lamented he could not achieve, hence the writing.

Texting, emails, and memos are common forms of writing. Very common in the workplace and in our everyday lives. Some people write out of necessity some out of want. I write for both reasons. I write letters and I write in cards because I still like to send "snail mail" to my friends and family. To answer the question, yes, I will be writing outside of school. My son is 3, soon to be 4, and we practice writing with him. We also read to him. I think if you have a solid reading and writing foundation, anything can be accomplished. I don't have much of an education outside of high school and work experience but I feel confident when I am introduced to new material. My parents helped me to develop my skills at a young age. The ability to write truly is a gift. Whether it be writing to express yourself, writing a letter to family, or documenting an important period in history, written word is powerful. Writing offers the ability to perfect exactly what you want to say. It allows you to erase and try again, and second chances are not something we get often in life. Personally, writing things down is the best way for me to get things done, whether that be at work, school, or home. We are in an era of writing! We have to write all the time. We write on our phones everyday by texting. It is the new form of communication (somewhat).We write little stories on our pictures, on Instagram and on facebook. If we make videos we have to write introductions of the video. We write reviews! We need to know how to write to get our views across.

It's a way to express what we feel, communicate, inform, or even tell a story. Sometimes we journal, write notes, reminders, before technology we would write down everyone's cell phone number. As we see technology has advanced the way we write, now we type. Instead of writing letters we send emails or text messages. We now type essays and not write them. This is why the nature of writing is now in a variety of ways and not just paper and pencil anymore. Why DO I write? I have to, I can't always communicate with voice.
