The Adventures of Polo is illustrated using a comic book format, and "readers" follow Polo on a wild adventure that begins at his treehouse in the middle of the ocean, and winds its way through the clouds, a meeting with the "Queen of Sea," a trip into outer space, and finally back home again where he sits quietly reading his journal and remembering all the friends he made on the way.

The Medicine Man

The Drama of Color story I chose for this drama unit is called “The Medicine Man”, which
comes from Indian Pueblos by Evelyn Dahl Reed 1991. “The Medicine Man’, is a short story
about a coyote who is instructed to not open a pouch or there will be consequences to his
disobedience. However, the coyote grows very hungry and opens the pouch to see if there is
anything he can eat. This leads to him being cursed with a toothache. After begging many
animals to help cure his tooth ache he comes across a mouse who is kind enough to bring him an
herb which heals him. The mouse's act of kindness leads to a promise from coyotes to never hunt
mice.

• The main book we will focus on is “Le Voyage de Polo” by R; “The
Medicine Man” from Drama of Color will also be used to deepen understanding of friendship and instruction.
• “Le Voyage de Polo” is a great book that is composed of pictures that tell a story, in which students can grasp comprehension, reading, geography, and
art skills.
• The folk story “The Medicine Man” emphasizes one of the geography standards included.
• The main objective of this unit is for students to learn to practice their reading comprehension and promote kindness and friendship.
• Students will also be able to make connections with different subjects using the book.

The first lesson will apply an English standard in order for students to learn the
basic elements of a story. Their comprehension and grammar skills will grow by
reflecting on the text and illustrations.
• A Geography standard will be focused on within the second lesson; students will
research different cultures and learn more about their own. Learning about their
peer’s backgrounds connects them and allows them to explore different places.
• The third lesson focuses on two Visual Arts Standards entailing creating. Students
will utilize materials to collaborate and create a story.
• The last lesson plan entails a Theatre Arts Standard, entailing students
performing.

Warm-Up #1

-The first adventure Polo goes on is to the ocean. For a warm-up, I will have students watch this video. Throughout the video, I will pause and give students time to draw things associated with the video on a piece of paper. At the end, I will have students bring their papers to the whiteboard where they will be displayed for the class to see. I will then provide an opportunity for students to look at their classmate's drawings as well as share what students depicted from the video. This will give an opportunity to review the information from the video as well as direct students to correct information.

-After we will do a walk-through of the story. As a class, we will "read" the story up to page 28. The story will pause reading where Polo arrives for his next adventure.

Today's activity will focus on reader comprehension. Students will go through each picture scene. After students will go through wheel comprehension questions. Above is an example of what a wheel reading comprehension looks like. Then they will fill in the blanks given to them at the bottom, the instructor may assist students in reading but encourage them to look for clues and use their voice. After students will write their answers in their writing journals. As students write in their journals instructor will assist students in spelling.

In today's activity, students will walk through Polo's trip to the moon. Today will be the last day of reading. The teacher will continue to walk students through the story and encourage students to highlight what they think is going on in the story.

Importance of "The Medicine Man"

I feel this is a perfect story to introduce to children k-4, because of the theme of consequences for actions and friendship. Through this story, students can be taught that it is
important to follow instructions. The mouse’s action to help the coyote shows an example of what it means to be kind. Due to the mouse’s kindness, the coyote and mouse become friends. This can teach students to be kind to others as well as what it means to be a good friend.
