Parker ALG applied to diagnostic tool to the policy problem of establishing a National Radioactive Waste Management Facility. The diagnostic questions led to the end result of collaboration - the highest level of engagement which requires (in this case) investment of community resources to ensure the success of the project. The journey:
- Has engagement been conducted thus far? Yes
- Has it been effective in achieving or coming close to the goal? No
- Which of the following do you consider it to be? Complex (given that for many community stakeholders, the specifics of the facility and impacts on the community are not well understood)
- Is the issue objective/factual or does it have subjective elements and competing values/interests? Subjective with trade offs (mostly due to the strong emotive/irrational response elicited by the image of 'nuclear waste'
- Do you forsee the govt/any other external stakeholders needing help in implementing the solution? Yes, in that community endorsement, acceptance and support are an absolute requirement for the facility to proceed.
- Do you have more than 3-6 months to spend on the project? Yes

The Fayol Group RI: I was involved in a focus group during a review of the department's culture and inclusion strategy. I think the department utilises the share and consult approaches quite well. During the formulation of the Open Government Platform (OGP), the department started to engage more broadly and openly with the communities and applied the deliberate and collaborate approaches successfully. Another prime example where the APS is utilising these approaches is the current APS Review. Going forward i think
