The American colonies had the support of Spain and France.

Executive power was held by a president.
The judicial power, in the hands of independent judges.

George Washington becomes the first president of the United States to have executive power in his hands.

In May 11789 the States-General were convened in Versailles.
This meeting begins a great political problem that will lead to the revolutionary period.

The privileged classes denied the request of the third estate, so in response they proclaimed the national assembly, which was renamed the National Constituent Assembly.

After the elections of 1791, the legislative assembly was formed, which was a difficult period.
In April 1792 the Assembly declared war on Austria, France lost and was invaded by Prussia.

Louis XVI was tried and convicted of treason, and later in 1793, he was executed by guillotine.
War was declared between the European powers.
The revolution became radicalized.

During this time many things happened that left their mark on history.
In 1793 there was a coup d'état to later sign a democratic Constitution, changes were also made due to the economic crisis.

Robespierre gradually lost his power to the point where moderate revolutionaries arrested him and guillotined his followers.

A moderate government was established and a new constitution was adopted in 1795.
The new regime endured several conspiracies. Napoleon Bonaparte took control of the government and eventually turned the Republic into the First French Empire.

Napoleon was appointed first Consul in 1799 and in 1802 he became Consul for Life.
Drafted a civil code. He created the Bank of France and signed a concordat with the Pope.

Being emperor gave him many powers.
He was quite expansionist and although he conquered many territories he was also defeated in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

This war began after Napoleon's invasion of Spain and Portugal. In this war, the aim was to put Napoleon's brother, Jose Bonaparte, on the throne of Spain.

Napoleon was exiled in 1814 but returned although it did not last long since in the Battle of Waterloo he was defeated (1815) and imprisoned on the island of Saint Helena, where he died.
