The 2 Americans had gotten a note from an official and showed it to a guard in order to pass. Similarly, Marco Polo had something from Kublilai Khan that helped him get across. 
Differences: 
In Marco Polo's journey, he didn't struggle as much to get across Afghanistan. Kubilai Khan had given him something that was like a passport. Differences:
In Marco Polo's time Iran wasn't like it is now. For the 2 Americans it wasn't the best time when they visited Iran. It was the Anniversary of the Islamic revolution, they witnessed people burning American references. They also saw young kids having the sense of despise towards the United States. Marco Polo had mentioned the people of an island near India being different. He said that the people would adorn themselves with tattoos. The 2 Americans visited the island and saw the people on the island still used tattoos on their bodies. In fact, one of the Americans got a tattoo by an islander.
Differences: 
Marco Polo had mentioned that people were cannibal and savage like. When he was stranded for 5 months he saw people kill each other, but when the 2 Americans were there they didn't see that. Marco Polo worked for the Mongols during his time. So obviously Marco Polo had more of a bias towards Mongolia. He mentioned he actually preferred living in Mongolia and surprisingly the 2 Americans also enjoyed living in Mongolia. They were welcomed by the people in Mongolia. 
Differences:
Marco Polo had been mostly welcomed in all places and didn't struggle as much as the 2 Americans with acceptance. The 2 Americans hadn't been accepted in many places and they also felt uncomfortable in some places. The 2 Americans were rerunning Marco Polo's journey and they wanted to see what he saw. When Marco Polo went to Uzbekistan he mentioned the amazing architecture. The 2 Americans obviously wanted to visit the place, so they did. They were able to see the architecture that Marco Polo had seen and mentioned himself.
Differences: 
When the 2 Americans went to Uzbekistan they were greeted by people. The people from Uzbekistan were glad and excited to see foreigners in their country. In the documentary, they mentioned how different it was and how the people there were different. In Marco Polo's journey, he visited Zhangye and saw many things. One thing he saw was an art piece, the reclining Buddha. The 2 Americans also visited this place. By seeing it, it proved that Marco Polo had been where he said he had been. It was one of the few pieces of artwork that Marco Polo saw and is still intact.
Differences:
Marco Polo had settled in China for 17 years and enjoyed it. The 2 Americans however didn't enjoy it as much. They were frustrated with the amount of people staring at them and making comments about them.
