Evidence: Happiness is the one and only priority in this story and is important for doctors and the rest of the people for the good of their well-being. Knowledge in the form of technology only enters within the highest individuals to make sure things are stationed with proper, mandatory behavior. 

Evidence: The narrator explains to Orlando that he never planned on treating him the same as the others and let his faults slide. He knew what he was doing for him to lead up to the very moment. He mentions the words “sane” and “sober” to describe Orlando since he wasn’t on any kind of medication for happiness and stability. His inconvenient actions show he was able to have his own feelings while everyone else lives with a required set of emotions. 

Analysis: Reed uses a simile when Orlando meets face to face with the narrator and he gets a feel for what he is like. He is already known for being troublesome and the narrator described his smile as if it were a threat. Happiness is regulated and the boy has the same, wide grin, but there is a striking evil within this, as if he knows something no one else does, or if he’s planning something. The narrator is intrigued by this and is the only one who seems to notice.
