But I had enough trouble understanding what was said by the speaker because I hadn’t quite mastered the meaning of the English vocabulary. Especially when this speaker spoke a word I had never heard before. And this is how I can only keep one listening journal. I’m very struggling with it. Until I repeated the video. In order to solve it, first I used English subtitles to know the words that sounded foreign. And to translate it I used the digital dictionary app name is U Dictionary.

It means don’t look at people just by looking at them. Because he may be a thug in appearance, but he has a good heart. If there’s a black man committed a crime, it doesn’t mean all black people do it. So, we mustn’t discriminate against them. Especially if we are only affected by a movie whose role is not real. Throw away thoughts about things we don’t know.  We’re all equally human. The title is ‘Taking a Stand Against Stereotypes’ and the speaker is John Seck. We need to look at this video to open our minds to racial discrimination. He said that he had once met a tall, black male at a concert in Detroit when his sister’s birthday was. On a dark night, the man approached him and spoke firmly. He thinks he’s mad at him. After he left John couldn’t say anymore. His knees were frozen and his hands were shaking. Every single day John watched the news on television and another black man committed a crime. The news made him think of a man he’d met at the concert and frightened him. But it’s not true. In America, they’ve been taught whenever there’s a crime in America and a Muslim did it, it’s a terrorist attack. That’s not true. Every time John sees the news, every single movie he watched, Hollywood, his mind forms a wall of ideas he doesn’t know he had. This wall just kept getting bigger and no one’s doing anything about it. Try to close your eyes and imagine a terrorist, a successful man, a smart student, a lazy man. If you are able to profile any of those by race, age, gender, and religion you have a wall of preconceived ideas like he once had. Because those examples had anything to do. There’s no correlation between the two, but our whole lives we’ve been taught there is. Don’t judge a book by its cover and that’s true. John regretted that he had been prejudiced against the black man at the concert at the time.
