What triggered the tsunami was a 9.1 magnitude earthquake the earthquake caused a 23 foot wave (7 metres) The wave quickly gained size and speed before hitting the coast of Japan, the huge tsunami was so powerful that it went 10km inland! (6 miles) the tsunami hit northeast of tokyo first then it powered back up the coast of japan, is at a higher risk of earthquakes because like 15 other countries it lies of the pacific ring of fire which is an area where there is a very high risk of earthquakes 80% of earthquakes happen in the ring of fire. Another problem caused by the earthquake and tsunami was liquefaction this is when muddy watery stuff comes up through cracks in the ground this image shows what liquefaction looks like.
