One of the common one is bullying. On page 36 Lanesha encounters a group of boys picking on someone. " 'Hey,' I shout. Some boys are dragging someone into the alley. Taunting, kicking. Punching." Here, Lanesha is currently viewing a bully situation. This kid is being physically bully and verbally. This is also happening in an alleyway so it's hard to get help there.

This happens every second of the day. In the book, Ma-Ma Ya-Ya is always pondering about death. She's comparing her perfume bottle to her of how it's being used up just like her. All though it is a cycle of life, it still affects others around us. On page 10 it says, "Mr. Death is losing patience. He'll come and ferry me down the Mississippi." This is kind of like saying that Mr. Death will come and take her as in she'll pass away. Andrew's mind always seems to ask question and would be teased and bullied for that. On page 28 it says, " 'How come y = x + z? why not z? ; 'How come water boils?' " This shows how he always questions the facts and how he thinks outside the box usually.
