The tragic incident was seen as preventable as the fire was a result of the poor working condition. The fire caught attention from the public of how terrible the conditions actually were. It was described as a true sweatshop, the employees were almost all immigrant teenage women. It was a three story building with narrow walls. Two staircases, with one locked to prevent stealing. It was a group of laundresses that were being under paid and worked since they were children until they were seen as “grown”. Starting with just 20 to 3,000 strikers,primarily African American women. Naming themselves part of the Washing Society. Their goal was to raise wages and improve work conditions for the women working. In August the strike ended with success and were recognized as instrumental to the New South’s economy
