Hi there, I had a question about classroom management and substitute teaching. I know that many students like to take advantage of a new substitute teacher they have never had before. What should a new substitute teacher do at the beginning of class to set the tone for the students, but not come off too intimidating?

Hello there! I found the idea of teachers sending their students home with letters about themselves to be very interesting. I never thought about the fact that many parents might be worried for their children, especially when it's their first year at school. Because some parents might not have the time to meet the teacher in person, sending them a letter telling them about themselves is a great way to get to know each other. It's also a great way to give parents a sense of comfort and let them know that their children are in good hands.

Hello! After reading up on some of the resources you provided for teachers, I found them to be very useful. Especially the resources you provided under "Setting Expectations". The teacher that I intern for at an elementary school uses both Class Dojo and GoNoodle. I notice a huge difference that these activities make in the classroom environment and in the students' learning experience. Having these activities provides structure and allows the students' to take
"brain breaks". After this activity, students' usually come back to their seat refreshed, and more prepared for the next lesson of the day. I am also glad that you posted about Class Craft. This is the first time I have heard of it, and I am eager to see how this would work in a classroom.

Hello! The information on this website is helpful and it is also informative for teachers to share their knowledge with other teachers. I believe this is a great place to share experiences and successful techniques that have been applied in the classroom. I believe being a new teacher might be overwhelming and intimidating at first. With that being said, I love the idea of sending letters home with a brief description about oneself. This will help to create a smooth transition for everyone into the school year and allow for communication to take place. I will definitely use this idea with my first class. Thank you very much for your informative resources you have provided, I look forward to learning more about the different ways that teachers can successfully manage their classrooms.

Hello there! I just want to mention how cute and clear this website is set up. It gets straight to the point with the resources, it has different informative ideas all in one page so you do not have to visit several pages. The colors and background really make it pop and I think that is very important, because it gets the readers attention that much more. I found the "Differentiation Support" the most interesting and it will always be behind my mind because of how accurate it is even though you might not think about it as always being like that. Children are different, even with their personality so it would make sense they learn differently too. Getting to know your students and knowing their customs can really help a teacher be successful.

I watched the video on flexible seating and I really liked it. I loved how all the classrooms shown in the video were all so diverse and uniquely set up. I feel like this also helps with individuality and responsibility with children when they are able to choose to sit in an area that is best suited for them. Like Justin in the video where he talked about how where he was sitting was best for him versus other areas, I like that he had the desicion and chose a responsible one! However, I wonder what would be the best way to go about to ensure that your students are really choosing what is best for them and not somewhere that is comfortable to slack off? I could imagine, especially with younger grades, that sitting in certain areas will enable them to get distracted or to distract others. What would be a way to diminish that from happening?
Thanks!

I didn't grow up using too many apps or websites in school, so the idea is still somewhat new to me. However, I still find it encouraging that technology can be used to create greater connection between parents, students, and teachers. It's so important for teachers to be willing to set up new ways of describing classroom expectations, completing assignments, and communicating with parents. Flexibility is essential as teachers interact with new generations of students and parents raise kids in a world requiring new skills.

I find Class Dojo and Go Noodle so useful for classroom management. The teacher that I intern for uses Go Noodle in substitute for PE, sometimes if it’s too hot or raining outside. I especially enjoyed learning about different technologically advanced resources like Seesaw, Go Noodle, and Class Dojo. I think keeping track of students' assignments and behaviors is very important and it seems much easier to do on a computer. I also liked seeing that parents are able to see their child's progress from home. What are some strategies for teachers to keep control of what is viewed on an ipad in the classroom? From observing in classrooms, I have noticed students can get easily distracted and start playing on different applications when the teacher is not looking. As an aspiring teacher, I would like to learn more strategies to help me manage a successful and interactive classroom. When I start teaching I know I will be using resources like this to establish myself and create the environment I want. It is incredibly helpful to have all of these different resources and a place where teachers are able to connect all in one location. My favorite feature is the Teachers Connect section. Everyone is able to voice their opinions or talk about how they might have implemented a technique from this page and how they might have altered it for their room. It really helps having a community of people that want to do the best they can and are trying to help out others in the field. Another feature I like is the School-Home Relationship portion of the Pinterest board. That is something I really want to emphasize in my classroom so having access to these ideas is really helping me.

I will definitely be sharing this website!

I use Class Dojo at my work and it is a great resource to use for class management. I also love on the first page how you emphasize teachers knowing their students on a personal level. I agree with you that this is very important for children and teachers so the teachers can make sure the child is on track and the child does not fall behind. Also, thank you for the site being so easy to navigate through! I do not have my own classroom yet but I will definitely be on this site to help me when I do!!

I really enjoyed that there was a mention for technology as it is now something that is part of our daily lives. I also thought it was great that Class Dojo was included for class management. I have gotten the chance to see how this works as the class that I am currently doing my fieldwork in uses Class Dojo. With this the teacher is able to let her students make their own choices that can either impact their points in a good or bad way.

The website has so many great resources that not only involves the teacher-student relationships but also the teacher-parent relationships. I found that SeeSaw was especially interesting because it has the translating tool built in I think it is a great resource in today's multicultural educational world because many times parents avoid contacting school staff when they cannot speak the language. Often teachers have trouble communicating with parents because notes in students backpacks may not get delivered or phone messages are not understood. I also thought the Pinterest board was helpful in finding ideas that might work for my future classroom.

Thank you for sharing your first-hand experience with using GoNoodle! I too have seen it used in the classroom and think it is such a fun transition in between activities.

Hi there, I had a question about classroom management and substitute teaching. I know that many students like to take advantage of a new substitute teacher they have never had before. What should a new substitute teacher do at the beginning of class to set the tone for the students, but not come off too intimidating?

Good question Ashlin. Some teachers provide an overview of the classroom management system they have in place when they write sub plans. If the system is straight forward enough for you to follow it's a smart plan to use what they use to keep the consistency of expectations when you are there. Just be ready for them to note when you are not doing it exactly as their teacher. This is a common situation, so just approach it as being the guest, you're working with it as close as you can for the day.

This is Barb Finnell, by the way, another thought is if they haven't explained in detail the management program or it's too complicated to understand in the 10 minutes you have before the students get there, feel free to explain your expectations calmly and clearly, consider writing them on the board. Be consistent throughout the day, but remember if you are there for only a day it doesn't make sense to complicate the experience with too much information.
