Dawn - When I read the NPR article I did annotating and tried my hand at talking back to the text. The last two sentences of the article were my favorite where the authors highlighted an interview with an apprentice ironworker who makes $60,000 and laughs at the misconception that those with traditional college degrees make more money. It made me laugh out loud reading that because I thought of one of our students in District 6 who had ACT scores that were among the highest in her class and chose to attend RDA and earn her welding certificate so she could become an offshore welder. She makes over $150,000 a year living off the coast of Texas loving her job.

Previewing a text allows me to quickly observe the bias of the writer, so I can know what to expect with regard to details they're going to share. Annotation makes summarizing and outlining the general ideology presented much easier. Couple major points: First, it's clear there is more than one good option for students to consider post graduating high school. Second, the financial return for college appears questionable, but I don't think we're getting the full picture or relevant data here. Lastly, it looks like hard work pays off either way; you're either going to sweat or choose not to suck at school while studying something that's employable. -Brandon

Summary-Options are not given to students many times for their career paths. 2 year and 4 year degrees shouldn't be a status symbol but only necessary for the job you would like to acquire. Workforce development is not on target because students are not given opportunities to explore and not encouraged to pursue that pathway in the most economical manner....Kelli

Joellyn- I "annotated" about the "repetition" of the stance that a 4 year degree seems to be pushed on students. Many times throughout the article, the author gives quotes or cites reports that agree with their stance. It is very easy to get a feel for the feelings of the author on the subject from the repetition.

Seth Pruitt

Outline, Summarize and Analyze

The basic summary of the first article is that not all high paying jobs require a four year degree. This is the sentiment that Mike Rowe obviously shares through his actions of sharing the article, and can be apparent to anyone who has ever heard of Mike Rowe and his show "Dirty Jobs" which has run for many years. By analyzing both articles, and particularly Dawn's response, it shows a clear lack of actual understanding on Dawn's part. It seems to me like the title of the article was read, and she might have skimmed the article, but she didn't read the article completely. This resulted in her seeing the simple act of sharing the article as some sort of "attack" on her belief system. I went through the higher education system, and it can be rewarding but it is also flawed.
