Hi! I'm Ryz Clyd Sabucido, but you can call me Clyd! In this Padlet, I'll be sharing my interests in Philippine pop culture. I’m particularly drawn to Filipino movies, especially historical films like Heneral Luna and Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo. I’m also passionate about Original Pilipino Music, commonly known as OPM, including bands like Rivermaya, December Avenue, Kamikazee, and my favorite, Sponge Cola. With that said, please feel free to snoop around my Padlet and learn more about my interests in Philippine Pop Culture!

Part B: My Love for OPM

There’s so much to explore in Philippine pop culture, from comics and magazines to movies. But for me, what stands out most is Original Pilipino Music (OPM). I grew up watching the top 10 Myx compilations on TV, which featured Filipino bands like Kamikazee, Sponge Cola, and Hale. This experience laid the foundation for my own journey as a musician. I owe a deep debt to OPM and the role it has played in shaping my musical journey.

Part C, Part 1: The Social Impact of OPM

OPM has always been a strong force for change in the Philippines, inspiring people on both a cultural and social level. According to the uses and gratifications theory, which explains that people choose media to meet their personal needs, OPM meets the emotional and social needs of its listeners (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1973). Songs like Tatsulok by Bamboo and Upuan by Gloc-9 are known for their powerful messages about national pride and social justice, uniting Filipinos and encouraging them to feel connected to their culture. These songs do more than just entertain, they build a sense of pride and belonging, helping Filipinos feel connected by shared experiences and values. Through these messages, OPM strengthens the Filipino identity and brings people together.

OPM also creates change on a personal level by helping listeners feel understood and supported, which can be seen in how people use music for comfort and self-reflection. One example of these types of songs are called hugot songs, where the song talks about the experiences and struggles of love, in which, a lot of people could definitely relate. The uses and gratifications theory suggests that people use media not just for escape, but to connect with their emotions and feel understood (Rubin, 1983). Songs from bands like December Avenue and Hale explore themes like heartbreak, love-sickness, and healing, which many listeners relate to deeply. This personal connection with OPM helps listeners deal with their own emotions, making the genre a source of support for many. In this way, OPM impacts both society and individuals, offering Filipinos an important way to express themselves and connect with others.
